Overview of the Cybex Aton 2

Cybex Aton 2 Sensorsafe, Lavastone Black

This rear-facing infant model is made for babies in the newborn stage and older, weighing between four and 35 pounds. With its built-in safety alert system, it’s well suited for parents who find themselves torn between looking back to check on their infant and wanting to keep both eyes on the road. It’s also rated highly for impact protection, due to energy-absorbing foam and a stabilizing load leg, both of which help to reduce the force of a crash felt by the child.

The Aton 2 is equipped with built-in plastic guides to assist you in connecting it to your vehicle’s LATCH anchors. As an alternative to LATCH, it also features a belt lock-off system for a secure connection using your vehicle’s eat belt. Like some other car seats, this model can also be installed without the base by using either the European or the American belt path method. This comes in handy for those who frequently or use ride sharing services.

The Cybex Aton 2 is compatible with a number of strollers, so it can be part of a travel system that makes it easy to transfer the carrier from the car to a stroller and back again. At less than 10 pounds, this seat’s light weight makes it relatively easy to carry. The 100% polyester fabric is machine washable, and needs to lie flat to dry.

Safety

The SensorSafe 4-in-1 Kit of the Aton 2 connects to a vehicle receiver which, in turn, sends notifications to a mobile app on your smartphone. Problems it can alert you to include situations in which your child unbuckles the clip, your child has possibly been left alone in the car, or when there is a high ambient temperature.

In addition to these automatic alerts, the Aton 2 incorporates a side-impact protection system and a stabilizing load leg base designed to reduce the force felt by an infant during a collision. A green button lets you know whether the carrier is attached properly to the base. It can be installed with its LATCH connectors or with your vehicle’s seat belt.

Expiration

  • The Cybex Aton 2 lasts for 6 years.
  • Where to find expiration date on Cybex Aton 2? You can find the expiration date by looking at the car seat on the left side.

Evenflo 30412311 Gold SensorSafe SecureMax Smart Infant Car Seat, Moonstone

Evenflo Gold Sensorsafe

A highly similar model to the Aton 2 is the Evenflo Gold SensorSafe Infant Car Seat. Both of these make use of the patented SensorSafe technology to alert you to potentially unsafe conditions like a high temperature in the vehicle or if it senses the child may have been left unattended in a parked car. Other similar features they share include a stabilizing load leg and side-impact protection. Both carriers also are conveniently lightweight, with the Aton 2 being ever-so-slightly lighter.

When it comes to ease of adjustment, the Evenflo model has a leg up in that it does not need rethreading to adjust the harness, whereas the Aton 2 requires rethreading. The Evenflo option is also significantly less expensive, although both are on the pricey side in comparison to standard infant car seats without the SensorSafe technology. In all, both are reliable choices that are highly rated when it comes to both safety and overall quality.

Conclusion

The Cybex Aton 2 is a hefty investment. It was one of the more expensive infant seats out there. However, the price reflects the quality. The Aton 2 has some of the best crash test scores out there and worth considering.

The crash test results are only part of the protection the Aton 2 offers. It has a load leg that stabilizes the base and reduces the chances of rebound or rotation in a car accident. The LATCH push-button connectors make it easier to connect and disconnect. If you choose to go with the vehicle seat belt, you might find installation and use a bit more complicated.

The comfort and quality level is pretty spot on. The Aton 2 has plenty of padding, and they use jersey knit fabric, which is heavenly against an infant's soft skin. It even has a canopy to protect it from the sun. The Aton 2 works well for smaller babies because it is tailored for little ones as tiny as 4 pounds.

The Cybex Aton 2 is less than 10 pounds, making it lightweight and easy to cart around. However, it works best for parents that do not change take the infant car seat in and out of a vehicle.

Chicco NextFit Zip Convertible Car Seat, Nebulous

The Chicco NextFit Zip is an excellent car seat, and will be a good choice for nearly any family.

This is a car seat that installs, adjusts, and can be used with less stooping, pulling, pushing, and bending.

For families who need a convertible car seat that is grandparent friendly, or for people who simply struggle to install a typical car seat, the Chicco NextFit Zip is an excellent choice.

Chicco NextFit Zip vs. Britax Advocate ClickTight

Chicco NextFit Zip

VS

Britax Advocate ClickTight

Both the Chicco NextFit Zip and the Britax Advocate ClickTight are excellent convertible car seats, for very similar reasons. They are both extremely safe car seats, and both rated for children of the same height and weight. They are both easy to install, easy to adjust, and easy to clean. In fact, there are just a few slight differences.

Britax Advocate ClickTight Advantages:

  • Three layers of side impact protection instead of two
  • Fourteen harness positions vs the nine position headrest of the NextFit Zip
  • ClickTight installation system is slightly faster and easier than the Chicco's SuperCinch system

Britax Advocate Disadvantages:

  • Heavier than the NextFit Zip, at 30 pounds vs 25 pounds
  • The Advocate ClickTight is one inch wider than the NextFit zip
  • Seven recline positions vs the nine positions of the NextFit Zip
  • Fabrics must be hand washed, while the NextFit Zip has machine washable fabrics
  • Does not come with a cupholder, while the NextFit Zip does

Depending on your upholstery choices, both car seats are very similar in price, but the Britax is somewhat more expensive. The Britax has an extra layer of side impact protection, and a slightly easier installation system. It's also bigger, heavier, and less convenient, without a cup holder and without machine washable fabrics.

Both of these are excellent car seats, and some parents will want to spend a little more for the extra protection of the Britax. Some parents need a car seat that is smaller and lighter, and don't want to spend more money for a car seat that is harder to clean. However, there is no clear winner between these two car seats, and they are both great choices.

Baby Gizmo's Chicco NextFit Review

Conclusion

This is one premium safety seat that may be a bit too expensive for what it offers. The Chicco NextFit Zip builds on the original design of the first generation NextFit with a redesigned look that offers push-on LATCH connectors and SuperCinch tensioning technology that makes the NextFit seat make LATCH installations easier to navigate and Zip versions of the NexFit make cover removal easier.

Consumer Reports gives the NextFit Zip its best crash protection rating. With Push button lower anchor connectors, a No re-thread harness, and nine recline settings, this really is the Lamborghini of infant seats.

The steel-reinforced frame, easy installation, and amazing safety features mean you can’t wrong with this seat that is on the heavy side.

It’s important to note that every seat on the American market must pass certain safety standards and crash tests so the price of the NextFit zip doesn’t mean it is safer than lesser priced seats. However, this seat does have what are best called indirect safety features; these don’t protect your child in the case of a crash, but they do enable you to install the seat correctly and secure your child with more ease.

Clek Fllo Convertible Car Seat Review (2022)

Clek Fllo Convertible Car Seat Review

Please click image for more info

Canada-based Clek is a newcomer to the world of infant products, launching in 2012 with the Clek Foonf. They are a company based on the idea that car seats should employ the latest and greatest safety technologies from around the world, using innovative materials and car seat innovations from around the world. For that reason, Clek car seats are considered some of the safest in the world, with exceptional crash test results that far exceed current requirements and standards.

The Clek Foonf was an immediate hit, but it's also an extremely heavy car seat. In an effort to make a lighter, more affordable car seat, the company introduced the Clek Fllo.

Who is the Clek Fllo most suitable for?

Clek Fllo Convertible Car Seat

The Clek Fllo is an exceptionally safe convertible car seat, designed with advanced technologies and subjected to safety testing that far exceeds federal standards. It is also exceptionally slim, at just 17 inches, making it small enough to fit 3 across in most vehicles.

It is not, however, a convenient car seat. Both parents and the NHTSA find it difficult to install. It has a lot of fussy little pieces for assembly and cleaning.

The car seat has to be completely removed from the vehicle in order to adjust the harness. And the advanced moisture-resisting fabrics, where liquids just bead up and roll off the surface, cause liquids to bead up and slide down into the buckle slot and beneath the seat cushion, into the mechanism of the car seat. This is very frustrating for parents if a child has an accident and pees in the car seat, or if a child spills fragrant, sticky drinks down their lap, because it is extremely difficult to clean out.

Even though the Fllo is already an expensive car seat, Clek also sells a number of high-priced accessories that are included for free with other car seats. The Clek newborn insert pillow that would allow parents to use the Fllo with infants from 5 – 14 pounds, costs over $40. The cupholder costs nearly $20. And Clek doesn't make or sell a car seat cover that would prevent liquids from spilling down inside the seat.

These are not trivial drawbacks, considering that there are a number of other convertible car seats that are also extremely safe, more convenient and easy to use, and are more affordable as well. We love the exceptional safety of Clek car seats, but hope that the next generation is easier to use and easier to clean.

Overview of Clek Fllo

Clek Fllo Convertible Car Seat

The Clek Fllo is a convertible car seat that can fit children from 14 – 65 pounds, or from 5 – 65 pounds with the optional purchase of an infant insert. It has incredible safety features, including an anti-rebound bar, an adjustable protective headrest, an automotive-style crumple zone, and layers of energy-absorbing foam. And it's just 17 inches wide, slim enough to fit 3-across in most vehicles.

Safety

What are this model’s NHTSA ratings? Every car seat sold in the United States must meet strict federal safety and crash test standards, so the NHTSA does not rate car seats for safety. Instead, the NHTSA provides ratings for overall usability.

The Clek Fllo has earned (for the rear-facing installation):

  • Labels: 5/5 stars
  • Instructions: 5/5 stars
  • Securing the child: 2/5 stars because the restraint needs to be assembled on arrival, and the harness clip is not labeled to indicate correct placement, and the instructions in the owner's manual are necessary when converting the seat between installation modes. The harness needs to be rethreaded as a child grows, and the seat needs to be disassembled for cleaning, which can allow mandatory parts to be detached and misplaced.
  • Installation features:1/5 stars because interference is possible between a seat component and the belt routing path, the belt positioning feature is difficult to use and is not labeled, the seat does not have three levels of recline, a printed line must be leveled to the ground, the LATCH and/or tether storage area isn't clearly labeled, and the LATCH attachments have buttons to press for removal.
  • Overall ease of use: 3/5 stars

The Clek Fllo also has an overall NHTSA rating of 3/5 stars in the forward-facing position, for different reasons.

  • Does this model have:
  • Side impact protection? Yes
  • Energy-absorbing base? Energy absorbing foam
  • Metal frame? Yes

  • What is this model’s child weight limit? Rear-facing: 14 – 50 pounds, forward-facing: 22 – 65 pounds

Ease of Use

  • Does this model have the LATCH system? Yes
  • Seat belt installation? Yes
  • Non-rethread harness system? No

Ease of Installation

  • What is this model’s weight? 25 pounds

Clek Fllo Installation

The Clek Fllo is a fairly complex car seat to install, and there are several YouTube videos that can be helpful to review.

This video shows the unboxing of the Fllo, which is useful because the car seat requires some assembly before use:

This video shows how to install the anti-rebound bar on the Foonf model, but installation is very similar on the Fllo:

Clek has themselves produced a number of videos as a companion to the owner's manual, so they offer short, step-by-step instructions for specific tasks. The best way to navigate these videos is not on YouTube, but through the Clek website here: Fllo Installation Videos and Manuals

Clek Fllo vs. Clek Foonf convertible car seat

Clek Fllo

VS

Clek Foonf

The Foonf is Clek's original and most famous car seat, and the first car seat to use pioneering automotive safety features like honeycomb crumple zones, along with car seat safety technologies used in Europe, like mandatory anti-rebound bars. The Clek Fllo was launched a few years later, as a lighter alternative with a more approachable price tag.

Both car seats offer high-tech safety features, advanced fabrics, and a slim footprint, at just 17 inches wide. They are both backed by Clek's excellent warranty and recycling program, and all Clek carseats pass stricter European crash tests as well as the North American standards. They both fit children in the exact same height and weight ranges, which means the differences can be summed up in two categories:

Installation

The Clek Foonf has a European-style Rigid LATCH installation system, using steel connectors built into the seat, rather than the flexible belt systems of American LATCH systems. This makes the car seat more integrated with the vehicle, preventing rotation and more effectively channeling impact energy.

It also makes the car seat easier to install (although many parents find both of these car seats difficult to install, and it's a common complaint about Clek cars eats). The Clek Fllo has a traditional, flexible LATCH installation system.

Construction

The Foonf has an integrated base, that gives the car seat two rear-facing recline angles and one forward-facing recline angle. The Fllo has a flip-out foot that sets a single angle for the seat in both installation modes. The Foonf requires the anti-rebound bar in the rear-facing installation, while it is optional on the Fllo. This means that the Foonf, with its steel attachment system, reclining base, and mandatory anti-rebound bar, weighs a whopping 33 pounds (38 pounds with the anti-rebound bar installed), while the Fllo weighs 25 (or 28 with the optional bar installed).

Both car seats are tested at levels that exceed federal safety standards, and are considered to be among the very safest car seats available. By its very nature as a heavier car seat with steel attachments, the Foonf performs better on crash tests, but only by 5-10%, and the Fllo still performs very well on these tests.

Since both car seats are rated for children of the exact same size and weight, both are extremely safe, and both have very similar advantages and drawbacks, the Fllo, at 8 pounds lighter and offered at a more affordable price, seems like the natural choice.

Video Comparison of Clek Foonf vs. Clek Fllo

Meg Collins Clek Fllo Review

Conclusion

The Clek Fllo is a premium priced steel-enforced safety seat with excellent crash test results. Its narrow 17 inch width makes it the perfect choice for a back bench that seats three with the seat in a rear-facing position. While it has an excellent safety rating, Consumer Reports found it not to have the overall performance warranted by its high MSRP. Heavy at 14 pounds, the seat lacks an external harness adjustment.

One reason this seat may be worth the money for you is it has a 50lb rear-facing capacity permitting a child to face to the rear longer. Other seats reviewed have a 35 pound capacity.

Clek Fllo Convertible Car Seat

Clek Fllo (click image for more info)

Be warned, however, the belt-positioning feature is not labeled and difficult to use. There are no levels of built-in recline available. Instead, a printed/molded line is present on the restraint that must be leveled to the ground.

Despite having no adjustable recline and being heavier than other seas, the Clek Fllo has an overall rating of 8.1 because of its superior build and quality. Another factor in its favor is the Fllo’s Aluminum Honeycomb Safety System, constructed to reduce the forces transferred to a forward-facing child in a crash.
