Nuna Pipa Car Seat Instructions (2026): Installation, Cleaning, and Adjustment Guide

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Instructions

Nuna Pipa infant car seat installation guide

The Nuna Pipa is a premium infant car seat with one of the cleanest installation experiences I’ve seen. The rigid LATCH base with a built-in load leg makes getting the right angle almost foolproof — the green indicator tells you exactly when you’ve got it. I’ve also helped parents install this seat without the base for travel, and Nuna gives you two belt routing options (European and American) which is unusually flexible. This guide covers every installation method plus cleaning, adjustments, and stroller compatibility.

Base Installation with LATCH

The LATCH base with load leg is the primary installation method and provides the most stability.

  1. Locate the lower LATCH anchors in your vehicle — they’re usually marked with the universal child seat symbol on the two outboard rear seats.
  2. Hold the LATCH connectors, push the base into the vehicle seat from behind with your legs, and press until you hear both connectors click into the anchors.
  3. Check that the indicator window shows green on both sides of the base.
  4. Deploy the load leg by pressing the grey button to lower it. Adjust the base angle so the green bubble on the level indicator sits in the correct range for your baby’s developmental stage — younger babies who can’t sit independently need a more reclined angle (bubble further right).
  5. The load leg indicator window should also show green when the leg is properly touching the vehicle floor.

Base Installation with Seat Belt

  1. Flip the blue lock-off up and then outward to open it.
  2. Thread both the shoulder and lap portions of the vehicle seat belt through the belt path.
  3. Buckle the seat belt, then tighten by pressing down on the base with your body weight while pulling up on the belt.
  4. Flip the blue lock-off back over the belt to secure it.
  5. Test by gripping the base at the belt path and moving it side-to-side and front-to-back — it should not move more than one inch.

Installing Without the Base

This is essential for taxis, rideshares, and air travel. The Nuna Pipa offers two belt routing methods.

European Routing Method

Thread the lap belt through each of the belt guides on the sides of the carrier. Then thread the shoulder belt through the blue belt guides on the back of the seat. Push down on the carrier and pull up on the shoulder belt while pushing the seat back into the vehicle seat. Test for movement — the carrier should move less than one inch in any direction. Check the level line on the side to confirm proper recline angle.

American Routing Method

Thread just the lap belt through the belt guides and buckle it. Check that the level line is even with the ground. Pull the seat belt all the way out to engage the locking mode (if your vehicle supports it). Push down and back on the carrier to remove all slack. Test for less than one inch of movement.

Middle Seat Installation

To install in the center seat (without LATCH, since most vehicles only have LATCH anchors on the outboard seats), place the carrier in position, thread the seat belt through the anchor points, buckle and tighten, and verify the one-inch movement test.

Airplane Installation

Place the Pipa rear-facing in a window seat (or center of a middle row on wide-body aircraft with two aisles). Tuck the aircraft lap belt into the lap belt guides on each side, buckle, and pull the belt tail to tighten. The Pipa is FAA-approved for aircraft use.

Stroller Installation and Removal

To attach the Pipa to a compatible Nuna stroller, remove the stroller seat cover, install the adapter brackets, and click the Pipa carrier into place until you hear it lock. To remove, press both grey release buttons simultaneously and lift. You may need to hold the stroller down with your foot while pressing the buttons to avoid lifting the whole stroller.

Removing the Carrier from the Base

Squeeze the indicator window with your index finger and thumb on both sides of the base simultaneously, then pull the carrier back and up. This works for both LATCH and seat belt base installations.

Harness Adjustments

To tighten the harness, connect the bottom buckles, then pull on the adjustment strap at the front to snug the belts. Connect the chest clip at armpit level. To loosen, press the release on the adjustment strap and push the harness webbing back through. You’ll need to re-route the harness straps to higher slots as your baby grows — the straps should sit at or just below the shoulders for rear-facing use.

Adjusting Base Height with the Load Leg

The load leg serves double duty as both a safety feature (preventing rotation on impact) and a height adjuster. Unfold the load leg from the bottom of the base, place the base on the vehicle seat, and raise or lower the leg until the indicator window shows green, confirming proper floor contact.

Cleaning Instructions

Carrier Shell and Hardware

Wipe down vinyl, metal, and plastic components with a soft cloth or damp sponge. Clean the buckle exterior with a damp cloth only. Do not submerge any hardware.

Fabric Cover and Infant Insert

Machine wash the fabric cover and infant insert on a delicate cycle with mild detergent and cold water. Air dry only — never machine dry, iron, or dry-clean. For the support wedge on the back of the infant insert, spot clean only (do not machine wash that piece).

Harness Straps

Clean with mild soap and water using a soft cloth. Air dry completely. Never submerge, bleach, or machine wash the harness webbing.

Removing and Replacing the Cover

Removing the Cover

Unbuckle the harness and remove the bottom cushion pad. Pull the cushion off starting from a corner. Remove the plastic hooks and slide the cushion over the release button. Flip the carrier over, pinch the shoulder strap clips sideways to fit through the slots, and remove the straps from the buckle. Pull the cover free.

Removing the Canopy

Press the quick-release button on the side to detach the canopy bar, then unfasten the velcro attachments to fully remove the canopy.

Replacing the Cover

Start from the back and pull the cover over both hooks. Push the belt straps up and through so they sit on top of the base of the cover. Push the center clip through as well. Reassemble in reverse order.

Maintenance Tips

Do not iron or dry-clean any soft parts. Clean the handle, harness straps, base, and shell with a soft cloth, water, and mild detergent. Hang soft parts to dry in the shade — direct sunlight can degrade fabric over time. Regularly inspect all components for wear, and use only Nuna replacement parts if anything needs replacing.
