Graco SlimFit Review (2022): Slim Design for Growing Families

January 1, 2022 by Sam Webster Leave a Comment

Graco SlimFit Review

Please click image for more info

It's an unavoidable truth that, as car seats get more safe and experts recommend that kids remain in them for longer, the seats get bigger.

Today, many people struggle to install a single car seat in a conventional vehicle, finding that they take up an incredible amount of room in the passenger compartment, and they will be used in the car for up to 10 years. This is particularly challenging for families with multiple children, who need to install more than one car seat.

The Graco SlimFit takes care of that. It’s designed to be a long-lived convertible car seat with a smaller footprint, making it friendlier for multiple car seats and growing families.

Who is the Graco SlimFit Most Suitable For?

Graco SlimFit 3 in 1 Convertible Car Seat | Infant to Toddler Car Seat, Saves Space in your Back Seat, Darcie

The Graco SlimFit is a great all-in-one for parents who drive smaller vehicles. It's the same size and weight of typical convertible car seats, but with a high-backed booster mode that can protect children up to 10 years, 57 inches, or until they are tall enough to use an adult seat belt.

But it's not just that the SlimFit is an all-in-one that is no taller or heavier than other convertibles. It also has an innovative cup holder design that allows the integrated cupholders to simply rotate away, creating a slimmer profile that gives you more room in the back seat. It's an all-in-one that can actually fit 3-across in many standard-sized vehicles.

The longevity and convenience of an all-in-one with this slim design makes the Graco SlimFit a particular favorite for quickly growing families or multiple births. When parents are expecting twins or triplets, the SlimFit is a great choice for long-term, high-quality protection that doesn't take up too much space.

Pros and Cons of Graco Slim Fit

Pros

  • Single car seat comfortably protects children from 5-100 pounds
  • Dual rotating cupholders can be swiveled inward to save space and make the car seat 10% narrower
  • Harness and headrest adjust simply with one hand and no rethreading
  • InRight LATCH system has easy installation
  • Machine washable cover
  • Narrow enough to install 3-across in many standard-sized vehicles
  • FAA approved

Cons

  • Despite the name, this car seat isn't especially slim. It's slim in comparison to some other all-in-ones, but there are narrower convertibles for parents who need especially compact seats.

Graco SlimFit Overview

Graco SlimFit 3 in 1 Convertible Car Seat | Infant to Toddler Car Seat, Saves Space in your Back Seat, Darcie

The Graco SlimFit is an all-in-one convertible car seat, that converts from rear-facing to forward-facing to a high-backed booster, protecting children from an incredible 5-100 pounds or up to 10 years.

Car seats with that kind of longevity are often particularly big and heavy, but the Graco SlimFit maintains a fairly compact footprint. It also has unique rotating cupholders that reduce the width of the car seat by 10%, giving you more room in the back seat for other car seats or other passengers. It's an all-in-one that can even fit three across in many vehicles.

Safety

What are this model’s NHTSA ratings? All car seats sold in the US must meet or exceed strict federal safety and crash test standards, so the NHTSA does not rate car seats for safety. Instead, they offer ratings and evaluations for ease of use.

According to the NHTSA, the Graco SlimFit has earned (for the forward-facing installation):

  • Labels: 3/5 stars because the labels do not explain how to use LATCH or the tether, and there isn't a full picture of a properly restrained child next to the sizing information on the label.
  • Instructions: 5/5 stars
  • Securing the child: 5/5 stars
  • Installation features: 2/5 stars because the padding may need to be moved in order to route the seat belt or LATCH attachments through the belt path, and interference is possible in the belt path, and the LATCH attachments have buttons to press for removal, and the storage places for LATCH and tether attachments are not obvious and may be overlooked.
  • Overall ease of use: 3/5 stars. The Graco SlimFit has NHTSA ratings of 4/5 stars each for the rear-facing and booster seat installation modes, for different reasons.
  • Does this model have:
  • Side impact protection? Yes
  • Energy-absorbing base? Energy absorbing foam

Many parents know that they want the convenience and cost savings of an all-in-one, and the quality of a Graco. But it can be difficult to choose between the SlimFit and the Graco 4Ever, since they are such similar car seats. Let's do a side-by-side comparison.

The core differences between the two car seats is that the Graco 4Ever has a backless booster mode and higher weigh limit than the Graco SlimFit, and the SlimFit is just over 1.5 inches narrower.

The Graco 4Ever is much more expensive than the SlimFit, and, frankly, it looks like it. The 4Ever has a cleaner look, with a more refined design, more robust harness pads, and more recline angles. But is it worth the extra expense?

For most purposes, the SlimFit is just as good a convertible car seat as the 4Ever, with a much lower price tag. In later years, the cost of a backless booster seat to support children up to 57 inches tall is still less than the price difference between the two car seats, and the Graco SlimFit is a lighter, narrower car seat that is easier for multiple car seat installations.

Confessions of An Aspiring Mom's Graco SlimFit Review

Conclusion

While it may not be the absolute slimmest convertible car seat on the market, the Graco SlimFit is certainly slimmer and more compact than most. It's also affordably priced for an all-in-one, and has easy installation and adjustment for lasting protection, safety, and comfort for the first several years of a child's life.

The narrow width and swiveling cupholders of the SlimFit mean that it's also a great choice for families with multiple children, who need to fit two or more convertible car seats into the same vehicle.

According to Graco, Graco convertible seat covers are machine-washable, so you can just throw them in the washer. To clean your buckle and harness, use warm water. You may use a mild soap on your harness, but NOT on your buckle. Allow the buckle to dry completely before you reinstall it.

Overview of the Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite

Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite Infant Car Seat, Baby Car Seat, Oakley

The SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite helps keep rear-facing babies safe who are from four to 35 pounds and up to 32 inches tall. Equipped with what the manufacturer calls its SafetyCore system, it absorbs forces in the event of a frontal crash. You can have it set up securely in no time either with the seatbelt or the LATCH system, the latter of which results in an audible click that lets you know it’s connected properly.

The straightforward bubble level takes the guesswork of setting this seat up at the correct angle, while an adjustable base provides four recline positions. You’ll likely achieve the desired fit in no time, since you can adjust the harness and the headrest simultaneously, without having to take the time to rethread the harness. So that you can incorporate this model into a travel system, it’s compatible with all of Graco’s Click Connect strollers

This seat comes with what Graco calls a RapidRemove cloth cover, for a quick and easy cleanup. Moreover, its rotating canopy helps keep your baby comfortable on sunny days, and it includes a handy window for checking on your bundle of joy. The fabric is conveniently machine washable.

Safety

The NHTSA has evaluated the SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite and rated it for a number of categories as follows:

  • Labels: 3/5 stars because the sizing information on the label does not have a corresponding illustration of a child restrained in the seat. In addition, the labeling does not include LATCH directions.
  • Instructions: 4/5 stars because, in part, the sizing guidelines in the owner’s manual do not include a picture of a child in the seat.
  • Securing the child: 4/5 stars because the seat arrives not set up for the smallest size of user.
  • Installation features: 4/5 stars
  • Overall ease of use: 4/5 stars
  • Does this model have:
  • LATCH-enabled connectors? Yes
  • A 5-point harness? Yes
  • An energy-absorbing shell? Yes

Expiration

  • The Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite lasts for 10 years.
  • Where to find expiration date on Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35? You can find the expiration date by looking stamped onto the back of the carrier.

Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite

VS

Maxi-Cosi Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 Infant Car Seat with Base, Nomad Grey, Nomad Grey, One Size

Maxi-Cosi Mico Max

Both the Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite and the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30 are lightweight, rear-facing models that come with LATCH-equipped bases. Both sport a relatively slender 18-inch width that allows for three seats in a row in many vehicles.

When it comes to safety, both of these choices have been tested extensively and provide important side-impact protection. The Mico Max 30 goes above and beyond, however, in that it incorporates an anti-rebound bar for enhanced protection during crashes. As far as adjustments, the Graco model has a leg up in that it has a bubble level indicator that ensures proper positioning. If low price is a priority, you may decide to opt for the Graco model, which costs significantly less. Ultimately, both of these reputable models are worthy of a look, as each offers plenty of features for safety and convenience.

Riley Eubank's Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite Review

Conclusion

Are you looking for a budget-friendly infant car seat? The Graco Snugrid Snuglock 35 offers the right things at a reasonable price. If your baby is on the small side, you do not have to worry about the fit, because it is built to comfortably secure an infant.

The Snugride Snuglock 35 infant car seat has a belt tension device that helps provide you with a secure installation process without a lot of effort. Also, it scores above average when it comes to crash tests and is FAA approved.

Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35 Elite Infant Car Seat, Baby Car Seat, Oakley

Graco SnugRide Snuglock 35 Elite (click image for more info)

The handle is useful, too, because it locks into place. It also comes with a canopy to protect your baby from the hot sun. However, the handle and canopy rub and do not work well together.

If you worry about having room in your backseat for passengers, you do not have to. The Snugride Snuglock 65 is narrow, lightweight, and slim. It leaves more than enough space to enjoy a drive with the entire family. The comfort level is around average for an infant seat because the padding is a bit thin. However, the deluxe base gives plenty of legroom as your infant grows.

The Graco Snugride Snuglock 65 is affordable, but it does not have many features, and the quality is somewhat low. But, it is safe and convenient if you cannot afford a different choice.

Who is the Graco Extend2Fit Most Suitable For?

Graco Extend2Fit Convertible Car Seat | Ride Rear Facing Longer with Extend2Fit, Kenzie

The Graco Extend2Fit is the perfect convertible car seat for parents who have read the statistics about vehicle safety for children and want to provide the best possible car safety for their child, by keeping them rear-facing for as long as possible.

The lower extension panel of the  Graco Extend2Fit creates adjustable leg support for rear-facing children as they grow, allowing them to comfortably remain in a rear-facing car seat as their legs get longer.

The lower extension is designed to allow more leg room in the car seat without taking up significantly more back-to-front space in the car, impeding front-seat legroom. However, at its fullest extension, depending on the vehicle, it may take up more legroom than some parents prefer.

The Graco Extend2Fit is specifically designed for extended rear-facing, so in the forward-facing mode, it's a decent, but not extraordinary, car seat.

The harness adjusts easily without rethreading, it's sturdy and safe, and the built-in cupholders are convenient. It's a reliable, comfortable, easy to install car seat in forward facing mode. But in rear-facing mode, it's a significant advancement over competitors.

Pros and Cons of Graco Extend2Fit

Pros

  • Prolonged rear-facing up to 5o pounds, with extension panel for child leg room and support
  • InLATCH installation is easy and secure
  • Easy-to-read level indicator for correct installation
  • Dual integrated cupholders
  • Machine washable seat pad
  • Harness adjustment is fast and easy to fit correctly
  • Fuss-free harness system holds buckles out of the way while putting a child in the seat
  • FAA approved

Cons

  • It can be difficult to remove and replace the cover correctly for cleaning
  • Square cup holders aren't sized to fit conventional round cups, cans, and bottles

Overview of Graco Extend2Fit

Graco Extend2Fit Convertible Car Seat | Ride Rear Facing Longer with Extend2Fit, Kenzie

The Graco Extend2Fit is an innovative convertible car seat that is capable of much longer rear-facing than other car seats. One of the primary problems of prolonged rear-facing is that, as children get taller, they have to bend their legs in awkward positions to fit into the car seat.

The Graco Extend2Fit not only allows children to remain rear-facing up to an impressive 50 pound weight limit, but it has a convenient, 4-position extending panel that can provide up to 5 inches of additional leg room and support for a growing child.

This unusual design helps rear-facing children remain comfortable and accommodates their growth over time, so that prolonged rear-facing is no longer as awkward or uncomfortable as it has been in other car seats.

Safety

What are this model’s NHTSA ratings? All car seats sold in the USA must meet or exceed strict federal safety standards, so the NHTSA does not rate car seats for safety. Instead, they offer ratings and evaluations for ease of use.

According to the NHTSA, the Graco Extend2Fit has earned (for the rear-facing installation):

  • Labels: 3/5 stars because the labels do not explain how to use LATCH, and there is not a picture of a child properly restrained next to the sizing information.
  • Instructions: 4/5 stars because the section describing seat belt types is incomplete and may be missing important information, the instruction manual storage location may be difficult to find, and there is no full picture of a properly restrained child next to sizing information.
  • Securing the child: 5/5 stars
  • Installation features: 1/5 stars because it may be difficult for people with large hands to route the seat belt or LATCH tether through the belt path, the padding may need to be moved to route attachments through the belt path, interference may be possible between the crotch buckle and the seat belt in the routing path, and because LATCH attachments have buttons to depress for removal and the storage location may be hard to find.

Graco Extend2Fit Installation

Because LATCH should not be used rear-facing above 45 pounds, for parents who want to use this car seat rear-facing for as long as possible, they will need to eventually convert to a belt and tether install. For that reason, Graco has produced a number of YouTube videos covering all the installation options.

For rear-facing LATCH installation, watch this video.

For rear-facing belt installation, watch this video

For forward-facing LATCH installation, watch this video

and for forward-facing seat belt installation, watch this video

Many parents find it difficult to remove and replace the seat cover for cleaning, so Graco has also produced this video demonstrating how to do it.

Graco Extend2Fit vs. Graco 4Ever

Graco Extend2Fit

VS

Graco4Ever

The Graco Extend2Fit is a car seat built for prolonged rear-facing in improved comfort over similar models. Not only does it hold rear-facing children up to 50 pounds, but it has an extending leg support to keep growing children comfortable in a rear-facing position.

The Graco 4Ever is a convertible car seat that transitions from rear-facing, to front-facing, to a high-backed booster seat, to a simple booster seat. It's an all-in-one that protects children up to 57 inches or 120 pounds. Let's do a comparison between the two:

In addition, both carseats have similar installation with the level indicator, and a 10 year lifespan. There are some details that may not be so minor, like the fact that the 4Ever has round cupholders, while the Extend2Fit has square ones.

While the biggest obvious difference between these two car seats is that the Graco 4Ever is rated for kids up to 57 inches and 120 pounds, and converts to a booster seat when it's needed, it is also much more expensive than the Extend2Fit.

Meanwhile, there is also an important consideration for the earlier years: the fact is that the Graco Extend2Fit is much deeper than the Graco 4Ever, at more than 25 inches deep. This depth is perfect for the extended rear-facing that the car seat is designed for, but may not fit well in many vehicles, particularly if a car has bucket seats.

For parents who want a single car seat that will protect their child in comfort for a full 10 years, until they are tall enough to use an adult seat belt, the Graco 4Ever is a great choice.

For parents who want to keep their child rear-facing for as long as possible, as experts recommend, and who have vehicles that can fit the unusual depth, the Graco Extend2Fit is unlike any other convertible car seat. Extend2Fit owners will eventually need to purchase a booster seat to fit their child as they grow, but it's so much more affordable than the Graco 4Ever, that the Extend2Fit + a booster may still represent an overall cost savings.

Conclusion

Do you travel a lot or have a long commute? The Graco Extend2Fit Convertible car seat has some pretty dynamite features for longer rides. It has dual cupholders and a footrest that gives your child more legroom when rear-facing.

The most practical characteristics are pretty great, too. The weight limit while fear-facing is 50 pounds. Also, it has a no-thread hardness that makes use and installation pretty straightforward. Its crash test results are some of the best because it utilizes push-on LATCH connectors. It is also steel-reinforced.

Graco Extend2Fit (click image for more info)

The transition from rear-facing to forward-facing can get a little tricky at first. The Extend2Fit is a bit bulky, too. The width does not work if multiple people ride in the backseat. It does provide your bundle with more comfort, but not much room for their older siblings.

Overall, the Graco Extend2Fit Convertible car seat is reasonably priced, super safe, and provides layers of safety and comfort. It works well for suburban parents with a busy schedule and is in the vehicle for long stretches of time.

The Graco Contender 65 may be the Goldilocks of convertible car seats: not too big, not too small, not too heavy, not too expensive, not too flimsy, but just right.

In terms of price, it's middle-of-the road: far more affordable than big, all-in-one premium car seats, but also more expensive than cheap, disposable car seats.

In terms of size, it's also in the middle. At just over 15 pounds, it's light and maneuverable, but not as light as the most portable car seats, and not as heavy as steel-framed car seats. It's narrow enough to fit 3-across in mid-size or large vehicles, and not so tall that it blocks the view out the back, but there are much smaller, more compact car seats available.

It has nice fabrics but not the most plush, good versatility for child fit and positioning but not the best, decent installation but not the easiest. In other words, it isn't the single best convertible car seat for any one use or feature, but it's an excellent all-around car seat; it's affordable, versatile, portable, safe, and has a good range of adjustments to keep a child protected and comfortable for several years.

It's also produced by Graco, a company with an excellent reputation for quality, comfort, and safety.

For parents who don't want the expense of a top-of-the-line car seat, but who also don't want a car seat that feels cheap and flimsy, the Graco Contender 65 may be the exact car seat they are looking for.

Overview of Graco Contender 65

Graco Contender 65 Convertible Car Seat and Nautilus 3-in-1 Car Seat

The Graco Contender 65 is made of plastic and dense, energy absorbing foam, so it's both easier to clean and lighter in weight than a steel-framed car seat. But it has also been extensively crash tested, and made with Graco quality, so it's perfectly safe and reliable.

Installation is relatively simple with the included LATCH system or a vehicle's belt system. And the single harness and headrest adjustment provides simple, one-handed adjustment with one hand and no rethreading, so it always fits correctly. The integrated cup holder can't be spilled or knocked over by an active child, and the cushions are machine washable. It's an excellent convertible car seat for the price.
