Clek Foonf Car Seat Instructions (2026): Installation, Adjustment, and Cleaning Guide

Clek Foonf convertible car seat installation guide

After installing dozens of convertible car seats, I can say the Clek Foonf has the most involved setup process of any seat I’ve worked with — but that complexity is what makes it one of the safest convertibles on the market. The rigid LATCH connectors, anti-rebound bar, and steel-reinforced frame all require careful installation to work properly. This guide walks through every step based on the owner’s manual and hands-on experience.

Forward-Facing Installation (3 Methods)

The Foonf offers three forward-facing installation methods. Before starting any of them, make sure the anti-rebound bar and rear base are detached and the seat is in the upright position. Always review the Foonf’s LATCH weight limits before choosing your method.

Method 1: Rigid LATCH Only (22–35 lbs)

This method uses only the built-in rigid LATCH connectors and is limited to children weighing 22–35 lbs forward-facing.

  1. Loosen the top tether at the back of the Foonf and move it out of the way.
  2. Pull the lower black lever at the front while simultaneously pulling out the rigid LATCH connectors from the back. Attach them to your vehicle’s lower anchors — the indicator window on each connector should turn green when secure.
  3. While pulling the same lower black lever, push the Foonf back until it sits flush against the vehicle seat.
  4. Route and tighten the top tether to the vehicle’s top tether anchor.

Method 2: Vehicle Seat Belt Only (22–65 lbs)

  1. Detach the seat pad from the Foonf.
  2. Remove the top tether from storage and route it toward the rear anchor (don’t secure it yet).
  3. Use the recline adjustment button to set your desired recline position.
  4. Open the forward-facing lock-off on the side where your vehicle seat belt exits — rotate the lock tab down and pull forward to open.
  5. Route the vehicle belt over the top of the back metal support bars and buckle it.
  6. Make sure the shoulder portion sits inside the forward-facing lock-off. Pull the belt tight and close the lock-off.
  7. Secure the top tether to the vehicle anchor and tighten.
  8. Shake the seat firmly — it should not move more than one inch at the belt path.

Method 3: LATCH + Seat Belt Combination (22–65 lbs, Recommended)

This is the recommended method because it uses both the rigid LATCH system and the vehicle seat belt for maximum security.

  1. Pull out the rigid LATCH connectors from the back of the seat.
  2. Route the top tether toward the anchor but don’t secure it yet.
  3. Thread the vehicle seat belt through the rear belt path — the belt should sit behind the child harness straps, not between the harness and the seat shell.
  4. Buckle the seat belt and tug to confirm firmness.
  5. Push the LATCH connectors into the lower anchors until the indicators turn green.
  6. Pull the seat belt tight with no twists.
  7. Route the chest strap portion through the red lock-off and close the red tab.
  8. Secure the top tether to your vehicle’s anchor per your vehicle manual.
  9. Pull up on the tether tail until taut.

Rear-Facing Installation

For rear-facing use, I strongly recommend installing both the rear base and the anti-rebound bar. The bar prevents rearward rotation on impact and significantly reduces side-to-side rocking — it’s one of the Foonf’s best safety features.

Attaching the Rear Base

  1. Place the Foonf face-down on a flat surface.
  2. Align the two wide-spaced tabs and two narrow-spaced tabs on the base with their respective openings on the bottom of the seat.
  3. Slide the tabs into position and push the base down until you hear a click.
  4. Tug the base gently to confirm it’s locked in place.

Attaching the Anti-Rebound Bar

  1. Remove the seat pad by pressing the black locking levers on each side of the top front.
  2. Remove the LATCH connectors from their storage pockets.
  3. Recline the Foonf to its farthest position.
  4. Align the anti-rebound bar with the guide holes under the seat and slide it into position.
  5. Lock it in place with the bolt and cotter pins.
  6. Store the LATCH connectors back in their pockets and replace the seat pad.

Rear-Facing with Seat Belt

  1. Recline the seat as far back as possible and place the Foonf on the vehicle seat. Make sure your vehicle is parked on a level surface. The ground level should fall within the blue indicator on the side of the seat for your child’s age range.
  2. Remove the seat pad by pressing up on the black tabs and unthreading the crotch strap.
  3. Unfold the lock-offs on the sides of the seat pad rest area.
  4. Thread the seat belt through the rear-facing belt path. The belt should sit under the two tabs between each lock-off. Use your body weight on the seat to get the tightest possible installation — don’t release tension on the belt.
  5. Fold the lock-offs into position over the belt, then release tension.
  6. Shake the seat forward, backward, and side to side at the belt path. It should not move more than one inch in any direction.

Rear-Facing with LATCH

  1. Remove the seat pad from the Foonf.
  2. Locate the LATCH connector storage area under the seat pad. Disconnect the connectors and undo the elastic band around the strap.
  3. Use the long grey button to loosen the straps evenly.
  4. Release the lock-offs and thread the straps under the black tabs, through the rear-facing belt path, to your vehicle’s LATCH anchors.
  5. Use your body weight to press the Foonf down while tightening the straps for the snuggest fit.
  6. Shake the seat in all directions — it should not move more than one inch.
  7. Replace the seat pad.

Headrest Installation and Adjustment

  1. Locate the headrest adjust button on one side of the seat and the pin hole on the opposite side.
  2. Retrieve the troubleshooting tool from the top tether storage area. (Return the tether to its original position before continuing.)
  3. Align the headrest poles with their respective guides on the seat and line them up straight.
  4. Insert the pin end of the troubleshooting tool into the pin hole. Once that side drops down, press the adjuster button on the opposite side while pushing the headrest to lock it at your desired height.

To remove the headrest, press the adjuster button while pulling the headrest upward to its highest position. Then insert the troubleshooting tool pin into the pin hole and press both the tool and the adjuster button simultaneously while pulling the headrest out.

Cup Holder Installation

The Foonf’s “Drink Thingy” cup holder installs on either side of the seat. If using a rear-facing seat belt installation, you can only mount it on the side closest to the vehicle belt buckle.

To install: take the correct cup holder adaptor and align the small tab with the small slot on the side of the seat. Slide the tab in and press until you hear a click. Then align the cup holder and slide it into place.

To remove: take off the seat cushion, press the button on the opposite side of the tab, and push the cup holder outward from the rear. It detaches easily.

Recline Adjustment

The Foonf has three recline positions. To adjust, pull the recline handle at the front of the seat near the cushion, tilt to your desired position, and release the handle to lock it in place.

Cleaning Instructions

Spot Cleaning

  1. Scrape off any dried residue and wipe the surface with water.
  2. Apply mild detergent with water to the spot and use a soft brush or spoon edge to gently clean.
  3. Rinse with clean water or a damp towel and allow to air dry completely.

Full Fabric Wash

  1. Detach the seat cushion cover from the seat cushion.
  2. Remove the side panels from the cover and the backside cushion.
  3. Hand wash gently without bleach. Do not machine dry.
  4. Make sure the cushion is completely dry before reassembling — putting damp fabric back on the seat can cause mildew.

Harness Strap Adjustments

Releasing the Harness Straps

  1. Unbuckle the harness and separate the chest clip.
  2. Loosen the shoulder strap to its longest setting.
  3. Lift the harness adjuster tab while pulling the shoulder straps out to their limit.
  4. Detach the tether hook from storage at the back of the seat.
  5. Remove the access panel to the harness by twisting the access panel lock counterclockwise and pulling.
  6. Slide the strap loops out and pull the shoulder harness straps through the front of the seat.

Re-routing Straps to a Different Height

  1. Release the straps from the access panel using the steps above.
  2. Pull each strap to the front and re-route through your desired harness slot height. Make sure there are no twists in the straps.
  3. Re-attach the straps to the access panel.

Removing the Base and Cover

Removing the Rear Base

  1. Set the seat to recline position 3.
  2. Lean the seat on one side and pull up on the handle at the rear of the base.
  3. Push down on the top of the base — it slides off easily.

Removing the Seat Cover

  1. Remove the buckle pad by tugging the top and pulling upward.
  2. Press in both locking tabs located at the front, just under the seat cover.
  3. Lift the seat cover while guiding the buckle through.
