When Do Britax Car Seats Expire? (2026): Complete Expiration Guide by Model

When Do Britax Car Seats Expire

I’ve been tracking Britax car seat expiration dates for years, and one thing that surprises parents every time is that different Britax models have different lifespans. Their infant seats expire after 6 years, most convertible seats last 10 years, and boosters fall somewhere between 9 and 10 years depending on the model.

The expiration date matters because the plastic shell, harness webbing, and energy-absorbing foam all degrade over time from temperature swings, UV exposure, and normal wear. Britax is actually one of the more generous brands when it comes to expiration windows — their convertible seats and the One4Life all-in-one give you a full decade of use, which is longer than many competitors.

Below you’ll find the complete expiration timeline for every current Britax model, where to find the date on your specific seat, and links to each owner’s manual. I’ve also included what to do once your Britax seat reaches its expiration date.

How Britax Expiration Dates Work

Britax stamps a manufacture date on every seat — not an expiration date. You need to know your seat’s lifespan (listed below) and add that to the manufacture date to calculate when it expires.

For example, if your Britax Marathon ClickTight was manufactured in March 2020, it expires in March 2030 (10-year lifespan). If your B-Safe 35 infant seat was manufactured in June 2022, it expires in June 2028 (6-year lifespan).

The manufacture date label location varies by seat type — I’ve included the exact location for each model in the tables below.

Why Britax Car Seats Expire

Car seat expiration isn’t a marketing gimmick. After testing and inspecting dozens of older seats over the years, I can tell you the degradation is real:

The plastic shell is the biggest concern. Years of heating up in summer and freezing in winter cause micro-fractures that you can’t see but that significantly weaken the shell’s ability to absorb crash forces. I’ve seen 8-year-old seats where the plastic had become visibly brittle.

The harness webbing also degrades from UV exposure and repeated loading. It loses tensile strength gradually, which means it may not perform as intended in a crash. And the EPS foam liner — the material that actually absorbs impact energy — compresses and deteriorates over time.

Beyond material degradation, safety standards evolve. Britax’s current SafeCell Impact Protection technology with an impact-absorbing base, side impact protection, and impact-stabilizing steel frame represents major advances over seats from even five or six years ago. A newer seat genuinely offers better protection.

Britax Infant Car Seat Expiration Dates

All current Britax infant car seats expire 6 years after manufacture. The expiration label is located on both the infant seat and the base.

Where to Find the Expiration Date on Your Britax Seat

Britax doesn’t stamp an explicit expiration date on most seats — they stamp the manufacture date, and you calculate expiration from there using the lifespans listed above.

Here’s where to look depending on your seat type:

For infant seats (B-Safe series, Endeavours), the manufacture date label is on the back or bottom of both the carrier and the base. You’ll see a white sticker with the model number, manufacture date, and lot number.

For convertible seats (Marathon, Boulevard, Advocate, One4Life, Allegiance, Emblem), the label is located under the seat cover. You’ll need to unsnap or unzip part of the cover to access it. It’s typically on the back of the plastic shell.

For booster seats, the label is either on the back of the booster (for harness-to-booster models like the Frontier and Grow With You) or on the bottom under the user guide holder (for belt-positioning boosters like the Highpoint and Midpoint).

If you can’t find the date or the label has worn off, contact Britax customer service with your seat’s model number — they can look up manufacture dates by serial number.

What to Do When Your Britax Seat Expires

Once your Britax seat reaches its expiration date, you have several options:

The best option for most families is a retailer trade-in event. Target runs a car seat trade-in program (typically twice a year) where you bring in any car seat — expired or not — and receive a discount coupon toward a new seat. Walmart has offered similar programs with gift card incentives. These events accept all brands and conditions, so even a beat-up expired Britax qualifies.

If your children have outgrown car seats entirely, you can recycle the seat. Remove the fabric cover, harness straps, and any metal components, then check with your local recycling program whether they accept the plastic shell. Some communities have specific car seat recycling drop-off events.

You can also donate it for training purposes. Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) use expired seats for demonstration and training classes. Contact your local Safe Kids coalition or fire department to see if they need training seats.

If none of those options work, destroy the seat before trashing it. Cut the harness straps, remove the cover, and write “EXPIRED — DO NOT USE” on the shell in permanent marker. This prevents someone from pulling it out of the trash and putting a child in an unsafe seat.
