Cosco car seats are the workhorses of the budget car seat world. I keep a Cosco Scenera Next in my closet specifically for travel — at under 7 pounds with FAA certification, it’s been on more flights with our family than I can count. But Cosco’s simplicity means the installation relies entirely on getting the basics right, since there are no premium tightening systems or bubble level indicators to guide you.
This guide covers installation, harness adjustment, cleaning, and maintenance for Cosco’s convertible car seat lineup, including the Scenera Next, Scenera NEXT DLX, and the Apt 50.

How Long Do Cosco Car Seats Last?
Cosco car seats manufactured after December 14, 2013 have an 8 to 10 year expiration, depending on the model. Seats made before that date expire after 6 years. The Scenera Next has an 8-year lifespan from manufacture, while some newer models extend to 10 years.
The expiration date is stamped on a label on the bottom or back of the seat shell. You can also find it in your instruction manual. Cosco is owned by Dorel (the same parent company as Safety 1st and Maxi-Cosi), so their customer service can look up your seat’s expiration if the label is worn.
Rear-Facing Installation (LATCH)
Rear-facing is the safest position for young children. The Scenera Next supports rear-facing from 5 to 40 pounds, which keeps most children rear-facing well past age 2.
Thread the LATCH connectors through the rear-facing belt path on the base of the seat. Check the recline angle using the level line on the side of the seat — for newborns, you want a more reclined position. Attach the LATCH hooks to your vehicle’s lower anchor points. Press your body weight down firmly on the seat while pulling the LATCH tightener strap.
The seat should not move more than one inch at the belt path. Because Cosco seats are lightweight, you may need to use more force than you’d expect to get a tight installation. I’ve found that bracing one knee in the seat while pulling the strap works well.
If the recline angle isn’t right, place a tightly rolled towel or pool noodle at the crease of the vehicle seat to adjust the angle before tightening.
Rear-Facing Installation (Seat Belt)
Route the vehicle seat belt through the rear-facing belt path and buckle it. Switch the belt to lock mode by pulling it all the way out until it clicks, then letting it retract. Press down firmly and remove all slack from the belt.
Check for less than one inch of movement at the belt path and verify the recline angle. The seat belt method is what I use most often with the Scenera Next, especially when traveling — LATCH anchors vary by vehicle, but seat belts are universal.
Forward-Facing Installation
Once your child outgrows the rear-facing limits, switch to forward-facing. The Scenera Next supports forward-facing from 22 to 40 pounds (note: this is a lower forward-facing limit than many seats, so check your model’s specific limits).
Install using either LATCH or seat belt through the forward-facing belt path. Make sure the seat is pressed firmly against the vehicle’s seat back. After the base installation is tight, attach the top tether to your vehicle’s tether anchor and tighten until snug. The top tether is essential for forward-facing — it reduces forward head movement by 4-6 inches in a crash.
Check for less than one inch of movement at the belt path.
Adjusting the Harness
Cosco seats require manual harness rethreading to change the shoulder strap height. There’s no no-rethread system — you need to:
Press the metal release button on the back of the seat to loosen the harness. Disconnect the straps from the splitter plate at the back. Pull the straps out of the current slots. Thread them through the desired height slots from front to back. Reconnect the straps to the splitter plate.
For rear-facing: straps should be at or below the child’s shoulders. For forward-facing: straps should be at or above the shoulders. Check the height every few months as your child grows — I usually do it whenever I’m doing a thorough cleaning.
To tighten the harness, pull the front adjustment strap. Do the pinch test at the shoulder — you shouldn’t be able to pinch excess webbing. Position the chest clip at armpit level.
Removing and Washing the Seat Cover
Cosco covers are simple to remove compared to premium brands. Start by pulling the edges of the cover off from around the shell. Loosen the harness and unhook the straps from the splitter plate. Pull the straps through the cover. Feed the buckles through the hip holes one at a time, then turn the seat over and slide the crotch buckle through the opening at a 90-degree angle.
Clean the fabric with a vacuum or compressed air for light cleaning. For a deeper clean, the cover can be spot-cleaned with mild soap and warm water. Check your specific model’s manual — some newer Cosco covers are machine washable on a gentle cycle.
For the plastic shell and metal parts: wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Important: do not get the memory foam padding wet if your model has it. Clean the harness straps with a damp cloth only — never use soap or detergent on harness webbing. The buckle can be rinsed in warm water and clicked open and shut several times to clear debris.
To reinstall the cover, reverse the process: feed the crotch buckle back through, hook the cover around the edges, rethread the harness through the correct slots, and reconnect to the splitter plate.
Why Cosco Seats Are Great for Travel
The Scenera Next weighs under 7 pounds and is FAA-approved for airplane use. It’s also one of the narrowest convertible seats available, which makes it easier to fit in airplane seats and rental cars. I recommend it as a dedicated travel seat or as a backup for grandparents’ cars. At around $50, you can keep one in multiple locations without breaking the bank.
The trade-off for that lightweight simplicity is less padding and fewer convenience features than premium seats. But every Cosco seat meets the exact same federal crash test standards (FMVSS 213) as seats costing five times more.
Cosco Manuals and Replacement Parts
Find your model’s instruction manual on Cosco’s website. For replacement parts (covers, harness straps, buckles), contact Cosco’s customer service. Never use aftermarket parts or covers not approved for your specific model.
If you’re unsure about your installation, visit a free car seat check event near you. A certified technician can verify your Cosco installation in about 15 minutes.
