Safety 1st Grow and Go Car Seat Instructions (2026): Installation, Cleaning, and Adjustment Guide

The Safety 1st Grow and Go is one of the most straightforward 3-in-1 seats I’ve installed. It covers rear-facing, forward-facing, and belt-positioning booster modes, and the QuickFit harness system means you can adjust the headrest and harness height simultaneously without rethreading. I’ve walked several parents through this installation, and the most common sticking points are getting the LATCH tight enough and understanding when to switch modes. This guide covers all three configurations plus cleaning and adjustments.

Rear-Facing Installation (5–40 lbs)

Rear-facing is the safest position for infants and toddlers. Keep your child rear-facing as long as they fit within the weight and height limits.

Using LATCH

1. Place the seat on the vehicle seat at approximately a 45-degree angle so your baby’s head stays in line with their spine.
2. Thread the LATCH belt through the rear-facing belt path on the seat.
3. Attach the LATCH hooks to your vehicle’s lower anchor points.
4. Press down firmly on the seat with your body weight while pulling the LATCH strap to remove all slack.
5. Check the installation by gripping the seat at the belt path and trying to move it — it should not shift more than one inch in any direction.

Using Vehicle Seat Belt

Check your vehicle owner’s manual first to confirm which seat belt locking method your vehicle uses (switchable retractor, automatic locking retractor, or emergency locking retractor). Then route the seat belt through the rear-facing belt path, buckle it, engage the locking mechanism, and press down firmly while removing slack. The same one-inch movement test applies.

Rear-Facing Fit Guidelines

When rear-facing, the top of your child’s head must be at least 1 inch below the top of the headrest. The harness straps should sit at or slightly below the child’s shoulders — never above. Use the buckle slot closest to your child (1st or 2nd slot only).

Forward-Facing Installation (22–65 lbs)

Using LATCH + Top Tether

1. Position the seat upright on the vehicle seat, as close to the seat back as possible.
2. Attach the top tether to your vehicle’s top tether anchor and leave it loose for now.
3. Thread the LATCH belt through the forward-facing belt path (from behind).
4. Attach the LATCH hooks to the vehicle’s lower anchor points.
5. Press down firmly on the seat while pulling the LATCH strap tight.
6. Tighten the top tether strap.
7. Check the installation — the seat should not move more than one inch at the belt path.

You can also use the vehicle seat belt instead of LATCH for forward-facing. Route the belt through the forward-facing belt path and always use the top tether regardless of which method secures the bottom of the seat.

Forward-Facing Fit Guidelines

The headrest should not sit higher than the tops of the child’s ears. Harness straps should be at or above the child’s shoulders — never below. The buckle can be in any slot, but choose the one closest to your child.

Booster Mode (40–100 lbs)

In booster mode, the vehicle seat belt restrains the child directly. Remove the harness straps and use the seat as a belt-positioning booster. The vehicle lap belt should sit low across the child’s hips, and the shoulder belt should cross the middle of the chest and shoulder — never across the neck or face.

Airplane Installation

The Grow and Go is FAA-certified for aircraft use with the internal harness. For airplane installation, use the rear-facing or forward-facing seat belt method (no LATCH on airplanes). Install in a window seat to avoid blocking the aisle. If the aircraft lap belt is too short, ask the flight attendant for a belt extender.

Harness and Headrest Adjustments

QuickFit Harness Adjustment

The Grow and Go’s QuickFit system lets you adjust harness height and headrest position together, which means no rethreading as your child grows.

1. Push down on the metal adjuster beneath the seat pad.
2. Pull on the harness straps to loosen the harness.
3. Swivel the QuickFit handles inward.
4. Raise or lower the headrest to the desired position.

Loosening the Harness

1. Pull the recline handle out and push the top of the seat toward the back.
2. Insert the buckle’s metal retainer into the slot nearest your child.
3. Pull the retainer entirely through the shell and pad.
4. Pull up on the buckle to confirm it’s secure.
5. Adjust the headrest to the topmost position.
6. Pull the harness straps through the slots on the side of the headrest.
7. Loosen the straps to the desired length.

Recline Adjustment

Always adjust the recline angle with your vehicle parked on level ground. Pull the recline handle at the front of the seat and tilt to your desired angle. If your vehicle seat is deep and sloped, you can place a tightly rolled towel or pool noodle where the seat cushion meets the seat back to achieve the correct angle.

Cleaning Instructions

Removing the Cover

1. Raise the adjustable headrest to its highest position.
2. Unhook the elastic hooks from the plastic clips around the seat.
3. Remove the seat pad.
4. Loosen and unhook the elastic straps from the plastic hooks beneath the headrest.
5. Remove the headrest cover.
6. Pull off the remaining seat covers from the sides.

Washing the Cover

Machine wash separately in cold water with the harness closed so the fastening strips aren’t exposed. Do not use bleach. Tumble dry on low heat for 10–12 minutes only — remove immediately to prevent fabric deterioration. Do not over-dry.

Cleaning Straps and Hardware

Wipe harness straps with a damp cloth and mild soap. Air dry only — never submerge, bleach, or machine wash the straps, as this can weaken the webbing. Clean the buckle and plastic parts with a damp sponge and towel dry.
