The Graco Contender 65 is a straightforward budget convertible that handles rear-facing (5–40 lbs) and forward-facing (22–65 lbs) without any extra complexity. I’ve recommended this seat to families who want Graco reliability at the lowest possible price — it doesn’t have the no-rethread harness or the rotating cup holders of the more expensive Graco models, but the installation process and overall safety are solid. This guide covers both installation directions, harness adjustments, and cleaning.

Rear-Facing Installation (5–40 lbs)
With LATCH
- Release the LATCH connectors from storage and verify the strap is in the rear-facing belt path (blue label).
- Set the recline to an appropriate position for your child’s age (more reclined for younger babies).
- Place the seat rear-facing with at least 80% of the base on the vehicle seat.
- Check the level indicator — the ball should be completely in the blue zone.
- Connect both LATCH hooks to the vehicle’s lower anchors (no twists) and tighten while pressing down firmly.
- Test for less than one inch of movement side-to-side and front-to-back at the belt path.
- Recheck the level indicator. Use rolled towels at the seat crease if you need more angle.
With Seat Belt
- Store the LATCH connectors. Set the recline and place the seat rear-facing.
- Route the seat belt through the rear-facing belt path (blue label). Ensure it’s flat and untwisted.
- Buckle and pull the shoulder belt all the way out to engage locking mode.
- Press down firmly while feeding slack into the retractor.
- Test for less than one inch of movement. Check the level indicator.
Forward-Facing Installation (22–65 lbs)
With LATCH + Top Tether
- Release LATCH connectors and verify the strap is in the forward-facing belt path (orange label).
- Unhook the top tether from storage.
- Set the seat upright and place it forward-facing with 80% of the base on the vehicle seat.
- Connect LATCH hooks to lower anchors and tighten while pressing down.
- Attach the top tether to your vehicle’s tether anchor and tighten.
- Test for less than one inch of movement.
With Seat Belt + Top Tether
- Store LATCH connectors. Route the seat belt through the forward-facing belt path (orange label).
- Buckle, engage locking mode, and tighten while pressing down.
- Always attach and tighten the top tether for forward-facing.
- Test for less than one inch of movement.
Harness Adjustments
Harness Strap Height
The Contender 65 requires manual rethreading to change harness height — unlike the more expensive Graco models with no-rethread harnesses. To rethread, loosen the harness fully, pull the straps from the back of the seat through the current slots, and reroute through the desired height slot. Make sure no twists in the straps. For rear-facing, straps should be at or below shoulders. For forward-facing, at or above.
Loosening and Tightening
To loosen, lift the harness release lever while pulling the shoulder straps outward. To tighten, pull the adjustment strap at the front of the seat. The harness is properly snug when you can’t pinch excess webbing at the child’s shoulder.
Chest Clip Position
The chest clip should always be at armpit level. Too low and it won’t properly distribute crash forces; too high and it could restrict breathing.
Cleaning Instructions
Harness Straps
Surface wash with mild soap and a damp cloth only. Never submerge or machine wash the webbing.
Buckle
Remove the buckle, place in warm water (no soap), press the red button several times to clear debris, shake out water, and air dry.
Seat Covers
Spot clean with damp sponge and mild soap. If needed, remove and machine wash in cold water on delicate cycle. Drip dry only — no bleach or machine drying.
Important Notes
Never use LATCH and the seat belt at the same time. Always use the top tether for forward-facing installations. Replace the seat after any crash. The Contender 65 has a 7-year expiration from the manufacture date.
