It's incredibly difficult to find a convertible car seat that is the total package. Great safety, easy installation and adjustment, easy to clean, comfortable for kids, and with a long useful life that makes the investment worth it. Many of the safest car seats are difficult to install or difficult to clean, or the most convenient car seats feel light and flimsy... it's hard to find a good balance.

The Chicco NextFit Zip may just be that perfect car seat. The NextFit is an early model, but has been refined and relaunched over the years, and every time it improves on the features that parents need most in a car seat.

Who is the Chicco NextFit Zip most suitable for?

Chicco NextFit Zip Convertible Car Seat, Nebulous

The Chicco NextFit Zip is an excellent car seat, and will be a good choice for nearly any family.

The innovative SuperCinch tightener multiplies force when pulling on the LATCH straps, and that makes this car seat an excellent choice for people who have struggled with pulling LATCH straps tightly enough in other car seats.

For older family members who may have arthritis or other conditions that make the heavy pulling of a typical installation difficult, the Chicco NextFit Zip will be much easier to install, giving them greater peace of mind. This is a car seat that installs, adjusts, and can be used with less stooping, pulling, pushing, and bending.

For families who need a convertible car seat that is grandparent friendly, or for people who simply struggle to install a typical car seat, the Chicco NextFit Zip is an excellent choice.

Expiration

  • The Chicco NextFit Zip car seat lasts for 8 years.

Safety

What are this model’s NHTSA ratings? Every car seat sold in the United States must meet strict federal safety and crash test standards, so the NHTSA does not rate car seats for safety. Instead, the NHTSA provides ratings for overall usability.

The Chicco NextFit Zip has earned (for the forward-facing installation):

  • Labels: 3/5 stars because the labels do not include supplemental sizing information, the labels do not explain how to use the LATCH system, and the tether is not labeled in the illustrations.
  • Instructions:4/5 stars because the manual cannot be accessed while the seat is in use, the tether is not labeled in the illustrations, and the section describing vehicle seat belt types is incomplete and may be missing important information.
  • Securing the child: 5/5 stars
  • Installation features: 4/5 stars because it may be uncomfortable for people with large hands to route the seat belt or LATCH belt through the belt path, and because the LATCH attachments have buttons to press for removal.
  • Overall ease of use: 4/5 stars

The Chicco NextFit Zip also has 4/5 star ratings from the NHTSA in the rear-facing position, for similar reasons.

Chicco NextFit Zip vs. Britax Advocate ClickTight

Chicco NextFit Zip

VS

Britax Advocate ClickTight

Both the Chicco NextFit Zip and the Britax Advocate ClickTight are excellent convertible car seats, for very similar reasons. They are both extremely safe car seats, and both rated for children of the same height and weight. They are both easy to install, easy to adjust, and easy to clean. In fact, there are just a few slight differences.

Britax Advocate ClickTight Advantages:

  • Three layers of side impact protection instead of two
  • Fourteen harness positions vs the nine position headrest of the NextFit Zip
  • ClickTight installation system is slightly faster and easier than the Chicco's SuperCinch system

Britax Advocate Disadvantages:

  • Heavier than the NextFit Zip, at 30 pounds vs 25 pounds
  • The Advocate ClickTight is one inch wider than the NextFit zip
  • Seven recline positions vs the nine positions of the NextFit Zip
  • Fabrics must be hand washed, while the NextFit Zip has machine washable fabrics
  • Does not come with a cupholder, while the NextFit Zip does

Depending on your upholstery choices, both car seats are very similar in price, but the Britax is somewhat more expensive. The Britax has an extra layer of side impact protection, and a slightly easier installation system. It's also bigger, heavier, and less convenient, without a cup holder and without machine washable fabrics.

Both of these are excellent car seats, and some parents will want to spend a little more for the extra protection of the Britax. Some parents need a car seat that is smaller and lighter, and don't want to spend more money for a car seat that is harder to clean. However, there is no clear winner between these two car seats, and they are both great choices.

Baby Gizmo's Chicco NextFit Review

Conclusion

This is one premium safety seat that may be a bit too expensive for what it offers. The Chicco NextFit Zip builds on the original design of the first generation NextFit with a redesigned look that offers push-on LATCH connectors and SuperCinch tensioning technology that makes the NextFit seat make LATCH installations easier to navigate and Zip versions of the NexFit make cover removal easier.

Consumer Reports gives the NextFit Zip its best crash protection rating. With Push button lower anchor connectors, a No re-thread harness, and nine recline settings, this really is the Lamborghini of infant seats.

The steel-reinforced frame, easy installation, and amazing safety features mean you can’t wrong with this seat that is on the heavy side.

It’s important to note that every seat on the American market must pass certain safety standards and crash tests so the price of the NextFit zip doesn’t mean it is safer than lesser priced seats. However, this seat does have what are best called indirect safety features; these don’t protect your child in the case of a crash, but they do enable you to install the seat correctly and secure your child with more ease.

Chicco KidFit 2-in-1 Belt Positioning Booster Car Seat - Atmosphere

Chicco KidFit

VS

Evenflo Spectrum 2-in-1 Booster Car Seat, Bubbly Blue

Evenflo Spectrum

A close competitor of the Chicco KidFit 2-in-1 is the Evenflo Spectrum 2-in-1, both of which offer high-back and backless modes, for years of reliable use as your child grows. Both support a maximum weight of 110 pounds and meet all applicable federal safety standards. Both are made with energy-absorbing materials to lower the risk of injury upon impact.

When it comes with adjustability in high-back mode, the KidFit offers a couple more available height positions, at 10 in all, whereas the Spectrum only offers eight. Both models feature dual cupholders, but the Spectrum also boasts two convenient snack trays that can stow away when they’re not in use. As far as price, the Evenflo model clocks in at a significantly lower price, which might make it a better choice for parents on a tight budget.

Helena's Chicco KidFit 2-in-1 Belt Positioning Booster Car Seat Review

Conclusion

With its lower price, clear instructions, and good crash test results, the Chicco KidFit is a mid-range safety seat with above-average features. The belt fit is very good in both backless and high-back modes. Unlike other Chicco seats, the KidFit has excellent labels and instructions. While Consumer Reports warns the seat can be a bit tipsy in high back mode, its take is this is a high performing highback-to-backless booster that provides a very good belt fit in either mode.

While this is a very good seat, this made-in-China product is both slightly more expensive than its competitors while also having a flimsy feel when carrying. The design style isn’t as appealing as other Chicco products.

VS

BRITAX B-Safe 35 Infant Car Seat - Rear Facing | 4 to 35 Pounds - Reclinable Base, 1 Layer Impact Protection, Raven (E1A728Y)

Britax B-Safe 35

The Chicco KeyFit 30 and the comparable Britax B-Safe 35 are both rear-facing seats that have similar height and weight limits (although those are slightly higher for the B-Safe 35). Both feature level indicators to let you know whether the seat is positioned at the correct angle. Both receive high marks for safety and are equipped with seat belt lock-offs for a secure, tight installation.

Of the two, however, the KeyFit 30 is priced a bit higher, so the B-Safe 35 might be a better option for those on a tight budget. The carrier of the B-Safe 35 is also slightly easier to attach to the base.

The Baby Cubby's Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat Review

Conclusion

The Chicco KeyFit 30 is the #1-rated infant car seat in America and for good reason. Its stellar crash test results and budget friendly price are a combination that sets this safety seat apart from its competitors. Easy to install and use, the KeyFit30 is lightweight, making it a perfect for extended time in the car. Consumer Reports rates it as one of the best seats overall because of its balance of ease of use, vehicle fit, and crash protection.

Despite its value and safety ratings, this seat is heavier and difficult to install without the base. The fabric is not as soft as other Chicco seats and may irritate bare skin on some infants.

Like the GoFit, Chicco has not supplied any illustration are pictures of proper child restraint and all instructions are in text. A head hugger or body pillow blocks the harness slots from being visible, causing problems for some.

On the plus side, this seat has a Recline Angle Indicator, premium lower anchor connectors, the uperCinch LATCH tightener, and ReclineSure leveling. Since safety is the reason for having an infant seat, the KeyFit 30 is first in its class.

Chicco Fit2 Review

Please click image for more info

Chicco is one of the most-trusted names when it comes to children’s car seats, and since its launch in 2016, the Fit2 has quickly become one of the Italian manufacturer’s most popular models. Featuring two unique positions to accommodate both infants and toddlers, and with a weight rating of 4 - 35 pounds, the Fit2 has been designed to keep children in a safe, rear-facing position for the first two years.

The Chicco Fit2 provides superior safety features, including an integrated stabilizer bar in the base and Chicco’s patented “SuperCinch” LATCH tightener. Premium Italian fabric and dual-density foam seat padding keep little ones comfortable, and the carry handle, headrest, and harness tightener can all be adjusted with one hand. It’s no wonder the Chicco Fit2 is consistently one of the most highly-rated car seats on the market.

Overview of Chicco Fit 2

Chicco Fit2 Infant & Toddler Car Seat, Tempo

Unlike traditional rear-facing child seats, the Chicco Fit2 has two distinct reclining stages for two different age groups, and the position can easily be changed by using the built-in stage position lever. Stage 1 is more like a traditional rear-facing car seat, and offers more reclined seating for infants 4 - 35 pounds. Stage 2 converts the seat to a more upright position for toddlers in the crawling/walking phase, without taking up more space in the vehicle. This position is suitable for children 15 - 35 pounds. The Fit2 features a 7-position headrest and a padded, no-rethread harness that make it easy to adjust the seat as your child grows.

The cleverly-designed base features a “stabilizer bar” that provides maximum vehicle-to-seat coverage. There’s a one-hand-operated 4-position spring-loaded recline foot, as well as bubble level indicators, so making sure the car seat is properly installed is a breeze.

The base also features integrated lockoffs and easy-to-use belt routing, ensuring the base can be used safely with traditional seatbelts. Best of all, though, is Chicco’s patented one-pull center LATCH strap with “SuperCinch” that uses a force multiplying system to ensure that the base is secure when using LATCH.

One of the most popular features of the Chicco Fit2 is the one-hand adjustment for the carry handle, headrest, and harness tightener. The Fit2 has also been designed for use with a number of Chicco strollers, and can be quickly and easily moved from the car and clicked into place. Another popular feature is the European-style belt path which allows the Fit2 to be used without the base in any vehicle with seatbelts.

The Chicco Fit2 comes equipped with removable head and body support for newborns, and an adjustable/removable canopy. The seat padding uses comfy dual-density foam, and is fully-removable and machine-washable.

Chicco Fit2 Safety Ratings

All children’s car seats rated by the NHTSA meet Federal Safety Standards and strict crash-test performance standards, so parents can be sure that they’re safe. The NHTSA also rates car seats for ease of use, taking into account factors such as labeling, instructions, and installation.

  • Evaluation of labels. 2/5 stars. The labeling doesn’t explain how to use LATCH and doesn’t provide adequate sizing information or harness height relative to the child.
  • Evaluation of instructions. 4/5 stars. There aren’t enough pictures to adequately illustrate sizing information and instructions for using different types of seatbelts are missing.
  • Securing the child: 5/5 stars
  • Installation features. 4/5 stars. The storage location for the LATCH straps is hard to access and isn’t obvious. No labeling available for how the carrier handle should be positioned in the vehicle.
  • Overall ease of use: 4/5 stars
  • Does this model have:
  • Side impact protection? Yes
  • Energy-absorbing base? No
  • Metal frame? No
  • FAA approved? Yes

Expiration

  • The Chicco Fit2 lasts for 6 years.
  • Where to find expiration date on Chicco Fit2? You can find the expiration date label on the underside of the carrier.

Who is the Chicco Fit2 Most Suitable For?

Chicco Fit2 Infant & Toddler Car Seat, Tempo

For on-the-go parents who want a car seat that offers an easy solution, the Chicco Fit2 is an excellent choice. Because the Fit2’s carry handle, headrest, and harness-tightener can all be adjusted easily and with just one hand, the Fit2 is super-convenient. Plus, the European-style belt routing means it can be used in different vehicles without having to worry about transporting the base.

Although the Fit2 works well with both LATCH and traditional seatbelts, it is comparatively large, so it may not work on the center seats of some vehicles. That’s definitely something to consider if you’re going to need multiple car seats in your car.

Probably the most attractive feature of the Chicco Fit2 is its longevity. The two-stage design means that this car seat can potentially be used from birth to 2 years old, which makes it a very cost-effective option.

What is included with the Chicco Fit2?

  • Adjustable/removable canopy

Pros and Cons of the Chicco Fit2

Pros

  • 2-stage system means the car seat can provide protection from birth up to 35 pounds.
  • Easy to install properly with LATCH or seat belts.
  • Doesn’t take up extra room in the vehicle when positioned in stage 2, and provides extra legroom.
  • No-rethread harness with 7 height positions.
  • Stabilizer bar on base provides increased surface contact between vehicle seat and base.
  • European-style belt routing means the Fit2 can be used without the base.
  • Fits many Chicco strollers.
  • Comfortable padded seat can be removed for easy cleaning.

Cons

  • Weighing in at 12 pounds without the base, the Fit2 isn’t the lightest of car seats.
  • The Fit2 takes up quite a bit of space and won’t fit safely on some vehicle seats.
  • The canopy has to be removed in order to move the Fit2 to stage 2.
  • Although the seat cover can be removed, it can be quite tricky to get back on.

Although both car seats share many similarities, the biggest difference is the ability to use the Fit2 in a different position, by adjusting it to stage 2. This, along with the added height limit of 35”, means that the Fit2 can potentially be used for much longer.

The biggest advantage of the Keyfit30 is its weight. Although the difference of 3lb in weight might not seem like much, it can make a big difference when you have to carry a sleeping child!

The Keyfit30 is a more affordable option, usually costing around $80 less than the Fit2. However, the Fit2’s potential longevity, improved safety features, and no-rethread harness make it a better investment, overall.

The Mom Friend's Chicco Fit2 Review

Conclusion

The Chico Fit2 is a unique rear-facing car seat that features a first-of-its-kind multi position seat, allowing it to accommodate both infants and toddlers. This premium safety seat accommodates children from 4 to 35 pounds in its Stage One / Infant position and from 15 to 35 pounds and up to 35 inches in the Stage Two / Toddler Position. Features not seen on many safety seats accompany its premium price. These include excellent Fit-to-Vehicle scores and an easy-to-use level indicator, making it perfect for accommodating other passengers in the back seat.

Chicco Fit2 Infant & Toddler Car Seat, Tempo

Chicco Fit2 (click image for more info)

Safety features that make the Chicco Fit2 a cut above include a handle that can be locked into any position once in the car, an Anti-rebound bar on the base, the SuperCinch LATCH system, a No-rethread harness, and seven headrest positions with one-hand adjustment.

One negative is that the seat does not come with a picture of a child restrained in the child seat next to sizing information on the labeling. This lack of labeling can be challenging but the seat’s ease of installation and design make up for it.

Who is the Chicco MyFit Most Suitable For?

Chicco MyFit Harness + Booster Car Seat, Fathom

The Chicco MyFit is a perfect choice for parents who do not continuously buy new car seats as their children grow. It accommodates a wide range of heights (38-57 inches) and weights (25-100 pounds) so that it will fit your child for years. When your child outgrows the harness mode, it is simple to convert it to the harness mode.

If you’re a parent needing to fit multiple car seats in one row of seats, the Chicco MyFit is perfect. It has a shorter width that allows it to be installed easily with other seats in the same row, and the “Cup Folder” cup holders can be taken off or even just folded out of the way to create even more room if needed.

The multiple ways that you can install the seat into your vehicle (LATCH and seat belt) means that you can install the Chicco MyFit into virtually any vehicle, and the Bubble Level Indicator will ensure that you have the seat installed at a safe and comfortable angle.

Overall, the Chicco MyFit is a perfect car seat for parents of younger children that do not want to buy several new seats as their children grow, and need extra space to fit more car seats into their vehicle.

What is included with the Chicco MyFit Harness and Booster Seat?

The Chico MyFit comes with two “Cup Folders,” soft rubber cup holders that are attached to the sides of the car seat base, are easily removable to clean, and can be removed or folded out of the way to create more space near the seat. It does not come with any additional accessories.

Chicco MyFit Harness

VS

Britax Grow with You ClickTight Harness-2-Booster Car Seat, Spark - Premium, Soft Knit Fabric - 2 Layer Impact Protection - 5 Point Harness [New Version of Frontier]

Britax Grow with You Clicktight

The Chicco MyFit and Britax Grow With You are both combination harness and booster seats with similar features. Both are rated as a Best Bet booster seat by the IIHS, and have nearly identical safety features such as a steel internal frame, two layers of impact protection in the seat, and additional protection around the head.

The Britax Grow With You accommodates children up to 120 pounds, while the Chicco has a weight limit of 100 pounds. It also accommodates taller children than the Chicco MyFit does, having a height limit of 63 inches, 9 inches taller than the Chicco MyFit can accommodate.

The Chicco MyFit has the advantage of taking up less space in your vehicle, but the Britax is slightly less heavy. The main advantage that the Britax has over the Chicco is that the ClickTight installation makes installation extremely quick and easy, which can be a big timesaver if you have to move your car seat around to different vehicles.

All things considered, the Chicco Myfit and Britax Grow With You are very similar seats in features and benefits. The Britax tends to be priced around $100 more than the Chicco. You’re probably better off getting the Chicco MyFit, unless you move your car seats around often, or need the extra height and weight accommodations offered by the Britax Grow With You.

Marley Park's Chicco MyFit Harness and Booster Review

Conclusion

The MyFit LE's higher price is a result of its steel frame, excellent crash test results, ease of installation, premium adjustable headrest, and comfort. This seat rates high with both IIHS and Consumer Reports because of its balance of ease of use and excellent crash protection. Clear labels and instructions along with Push-on LATCH connectors with automatic retractors make this seat well worth the price.

Some things that set the MyFit LE apart are its SuperCinch tensioning technology that makes latch installation much easier and forward-facing level indicators.

Clear labeling is not present with this Chicco seat. No supplemental sizing information is given on the labels, the tether is not labeled in the illustrations, and labels do not show how to prepare LATCH attachments or the tether hook for use. A major drawback is cleaning., Loose parts may be generated when disassembling for cleaning, and the harness must be rethreaded when reassembling after cleaning.

Even so, the SuperCinch LATCH system, steel frame, breathable mesh fabric, and SuperCinch LATCH Tightener make the LE label well deserved. Backed by an eight-year warranty.
