Graco 4Ever Car Seat Instructions (2026): Installation, Mode Changes, and Cleaning Guide

The Graco 4Ever is the all-in-one car seat I’ve installed more than any other. It covers four stages — rear-facing harness (4–40 lbs), forward-facing harness (22–65 lbs), highback booster (40–100 lbs), and backless booster (40–120 lbs) — with a 10-year expiration that means one seat can genuinely serve a child from birth through elementary school. The no-rethread harness that moves with the headrest is what makes daily use so practical, and the 6-position recline works well in both directions. This guide covers installation for every mode, harness adjustments, mode transitions, and cleaning.

Rear-Facing Installation with LATCH (4–40 lbs)

1. Release the LATCH connectors from their storage clips (press the red buttons). Verify the strap is routed through the rear-facing belt path (blue label).
2. Pull the recline handle at the front and set the seat to a recline position appropriate for your child’s age. Younger babies need more recline.
3. Place the seat rear-facing in the vehicle. At least 80% of the base should sit on the vehicle seat cushion.
4. Check the level indicator on the side — the ball should be completely in the blue zone. For babies under 3 months, the ball must fully cover the light blue circle.
5. Extend the LATCH strap to full length, then connect both hooks to the vehicle’s lower anchors. No twists in the strap.
6. Press down firmly at the center of the seat while tightening the LATCH strap until snug.
7. Test the installation — grip the seat at the belt path and push side-to-side and front-to-back. It should move less than one inch.
8. Recheck the level indicator. Use rolled towels under the base at the seat crease if you need to adjust the angle.

Rear-Facing Installation with Seat Belt

1. Store the LATCH connectors on the plastic bars so they’re out of the way.
2. Set the recline position and place the seat rear-facing with 80% of the base on the vehicle seat.
3. Route the vehicle seat belt through the rear-facing belt path (blue label). Make sure the belt isn’t twisted and sits in front of the buckle strap.
4. Buckle the seat belt, then pull the shoulder belt all the way out to engage locking mode (you’ll hear a click).
5. Press down firmly while pulling the shoulder belt to tighten. Feed slack back into the retractor.
6. Test for less than one inch of movement at the belt path.
7. Check the level indicator and adjust with rolled towels if needed.

Forward-Facing Installation with LATCH + Tether (22–65 lbs)

1. Release the LATCH connectors and verify the strap is in the forward-facing belt path (orange label).
2. Unhook the top tether from storage and lay it over the seat back.
3. Set the recline to an upright position appropriate for forward-facing (positions 4–6).
4. Place the seat forward-facing with at least 80% of the base on the vehicle seat.
5. Connect the LATCH hooks to the lower anchors and tighten the strap while pressing down firmly on the seat.
6. Attach the top tether to your vehicle’s tether anchor and tighten until snug.
7. Test for less than one inch of movement at the belt path.

Forward-Facing Installation with Seat Belt + Tether

1. Store the LATCH connectors. Unhook the top tether.
2. Set the recline to an upright forward-facing position and place the seat with 80% on the vehicle seat.
3. Route the seat belt through the forward-facing belt path (orange label). Buckle and ensure no twists.
4. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out to engage locking mode, then press down while feeding slack into the retractor.
5. Attach and tighten the top tether. Always use the top tether for forward-facing installation regardless of belt method.
6. Test for less than one inch of movement.

Highback Booster Mode (40–100 lbs)

In this mode, the vehicle seat belt restrains the child directly — no harness.

1. Remove the harness straps from the seat (see harness removal section below).
2. Set the seat upright in the vehicle.
3. Seat your child and route the vehicle lap belt low across the hips and the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and shoulder — never across the neck or face.
4. Use the built-in belt guides to position the belt correctly.
5. The top of the child’s ears should not be above the top of the headrest.

Backless Booster Mode (40–120 lbs)

1. Remove the seat back from the base (follow the instructions in your manual for detaching the back).
2. Place the base on the vehicle seat.
3. Seat your child with the lap belt low on the hips and the shoulder belt across the chest and shoulder.
4. Your child should be tall enough that the shoulder belt fits properly without the highback — typically 40+ inches tall.

Important: Never Use LATCH and Seat Belt Together

The 4Ever is designed to handle crash forces through either LATCH or the seat belt, but not both simultaneously. Using both could cause the shell to experience forces from conflicting angles. Always choose one method.

Harness Adjustments

No-Rethread Harness Height

The 4Ever’s harness moves with the headrest, so you never need to rethread. Squeeze the headrest adjustment handle at the back and slide up or down. For rear-facing, straps should be at or below the child’s shoulders. For forward-facing, at or above.

Loosening the Harness

Lift the harness release lever at the front of the seat while pulling the shoulder straps outward above the chest clip.

Tightening the Harness

Pull the adjustment strap at the front between the child’s legs. The harness is snug enough when you can’t pinch excess webbing at the shoulder.

Moving the Crotch Buckle

1. Recline the seat and locate the metal retainer underneath the shell.
2. Rotate the retainer and push it up through the shell and pad.
3. Pull the buckle out from the top, then insert the retainer in the new slot.
4. Pull through from underneath and tug to confirm it’s secure.

Removing the Harness (for Booster Conversion)

To convert from harness mode to booster mode, you’ll need to fully remove the harness straps, chest clip, and buckle assembly. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the owner’s manual carefully. Store all harness components in case you need to reinstall them for a younger child.

Recline Positions

The 4Ever has 6 recline positions. Rear-facing uses the more reclined positions (1–4), forward-facing uses more upright positions (4–6), and booster mode uses the most upright position. Pull the recline handle at the front of the seat to adjust.

Cleaning Instructions

Harness Straps

Surface wash only with mild soap and a damp cloth. Never submerge, bleach, or machine wash — water immersion weakens the webbing.

Buckle

Remove the buckle from the seat, place it in a cup of warm water (no soap), and press the red button several times to flush debris. Shake out excess water and air dry completely before reinstalling.

Seat Pad and Covers

Spot clean with a damp sponge and mild soap. For deeper cleaning, remove the covers and machine wash in cold water on a delicate cycle. Drip dry only — no bleach, no machine drying. When reassembling, make sure straps rethread over the metal bar with no twists.

Plastic Parts and Cup Holders

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Push up on the bottom of cup holders to remove them for thorough cleaning.

When to Replace the Seat

The 4Ever has a 10-year expiration from the manufacture date — one of the longest in the industry. Always replace the seat after any crash, even a minor one, as unseen damage could compromise protection.
