As a new parent, you have a lot to learn in a relatively short period of time. If you use your car a lot, you will simply need to learn all about car seats, and fast.

In recent times, we’ve seen numerous car seat manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon of offering seats that will get you through different stages of seats.

The “3-in-1” in this car seat’s name means that it will get you through three different stages of your child’s growth without the need to replace the seat with another product. This will save you a lot of time and money.

The “Grow & Go” part means that the seat will “grow” as your child grows and is adjustable in terms of placement, orientation, and several other features.

In terms of child protection, the seat is equipped with many features. What else would you expect from the brand that patented the “Baby on Board” car stickers and then moved on to make other fine products for a child’s safety?

The harnesses are simple and easy to use, so it will never be any fuss to get your baby in or out of the seat.

Here’s a simple Safety 1st Grow & Go EX Air 3-in-1 convertible car seat video that will give you the basic info on the product:

Who Is It For?

Besides the obvious fact that it’s a car seat for kids, let’s now get back to the four different stages of car seats. The Grow & Go EX Air 3-in-1 will cover the first three which isn’t a small feat. If you didn’t know this you might be spending tremendous amounts of time and money on three different car seats.

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

As your child grows, the seat will grow along with them, so it begins at the first, rear-facing stage. Newborns and toddlers from 5 to 50 pounds can travel in a rear-facing seat, as it is the first stage of car seats. The upper limit is set by the rating of your car seat. The Grow & Go is rated up to 50 pounds in the rear-facing configuration.

Once your child grows big enough for the second stage, you can simply turn the seat around so that it becomes a forward-facing one. Children who weigh from 22 to 65 pounds can ride in a seat like that. Again, this weight range is for the Grow & Go. There’s some overlap in the weight ranges so you can customize some.

The third and last stage that this car seat can handle is the so called belt positioning booster. This stage involves car seats which can handle kids of up to 100 pounds of weight. Also, in this mode of transportation, your child can use the factory-installed seat belts for an increased level of safety.

Even though there are car seats that can handle the fourth stage, this one can’t, but the ones that can handle all four stages are usual too bulky to be practical.

When you consider all this, you will easily come to the conclusion that this car seat covers a span of 10 years of a child’s life. If you plan on having even more kids, this will definitely be a tremendous investment before you kids outgrow its limitations.

Also, when you think of the price range where it fits, you’ll easily understand that it provides quite a lot of bang for your buck.

Features Overview

Safer Seat up to 100 pounds

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

Aside from the aforementioned three stages of car seat life that it can handle, there are also other good things it can provide you with.

A child weight range of 5 to 100 pounds is no small feat in its own, but let’s highlight that it’s also rated for up to fifty pounds for rear-facing transportation of toddlers.

This is a feature almost always found only on much more expensive car seats which are designed to cover all four car seat stages. No matter how big your baby has grown, this was and always will be a much safer way to travel than the front-facing configuration.

Air Protect Technology

The next thing we’d like to tell you about is Safety 1st’s Air Protect Advanced Side Impact Protection.

This is an advanced system of cushion protection, which after numerous tests they’ve come up with something they claim even exceeds Federal Safety Standards.

QuickFit Harness

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

Another clever solution comes in the form of QuickFit Harness. It makes for a rather easy, one-step adjustment of both the headrest and the harness.

It can be done with only one hand.
While we’re at the subject of harness, its holders keep the straps out of your way while you’re taking your baby in or out of the seat, which is another great thing.

Integrated Cup Holders

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

The seat also comes with two integrated cup holders. There are three different comfort pillows, the lumbar, the head, and the seat, and they are all reversible.

Easy to Clean Up

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

Last but not least, we’d like to point out that the seat is very easy to keep clean. It comes with a cover which is safe to wash in a washing machine and dryer.

When it gets dirty, you simply take it off by unsnapping it. There’s no need to disassemble it or remove the harness.

Different Colors to Choose From

Safety 1st Guide Different Colors

When it comes to choosing the perfect color for your car seat, this is where the Safety 1st really excels, as there are ten different finishes to choose from.

They include Moonlit Path, Dusty Rose, Royal Grape, Teal Topaz, Black Bird, Lithograph, Arctic Dream, Silverberry Ash, Onyx Crush, and Storm 2.

The Dimensions

Another important aspect we need to discuss is the seat dimensions and limitations, because not all car seats can fit all car models.

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

When assembled, the Safety 1st Grow & Go EX Air 3-in-1 convertible car seat dimensions are 24 x 19 x 23.75 inches. It is designed to give you as much legroom for passengers without sacrificing the comfort of your child.

The seat itself weighs 20 pounds, so it can’t really be characterized as lightweight and that’s the reason why most moms may balk at this. Such a bulky and heavy car seat may not be easy to move around before and after the installation process, or when you want to switch it from rear to front facing.

When checking the range of harness height, it spans from 5.5 inches at its lowest to 16.5 inches at its highest. Beside the no-rethread harness, there are three crotch buckle settings to choose from, and these include 4.5 inches, 5.5 inches, and 6.5 inches when measured from the seat bight.

On top of this, you can choose from three different recline positions, although you can’t use them all in different configurations.

The first can only be used for booster or front-facing configuration, while the remaining two can only be used when the seat it installed in the rear-facing configuration.

Weight & Height Limitations

As far as limitations are concerned, when positioned in the rear-facing configuration, the Grow & Go 3-in-1 can carry a child that weighs anywhere between 5 and 50 pounds. As far as height limitations are concerned, they range from 19 to 49 inches.

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

Please do make sure that your baby’s head stays entirely within the headrest when it’s extended. When the shell is fully extended, the height is at the 27 inch mark.

When all is said and done, this seat is more limited by weight than height.
In the forward-facing configuration, this car seat can take anything between 22 and 65 pounds of weight. The height limitation ranges from 29 to 49 inches. Keep in mind that your child’s ears need to fit within the headrest when it is extended to its limit.

Although the minimum age required for a child to sit in a forward-facing configuration is 2, it is best to keep things safe by simply waiting until the child outgrows the height or weight limitations for rear-facing configuration, whichever occurs first.

The high-back booster configuration can handle a child that weighs anywhere between 40 and 100 pounds. The height range is between 43 and 52 inches. As with the previous configuration, your child’s ears need to stay within the confines of the extended headrest.

It is strongly suggested by the manufacturer not to switch from the front-facing configuration to the high-back booster until your child reaches the age of 4. Either way, a preschooler should never be on a booster.

When compared to several other models on the market, the Grow & Go 3-in-1 doesn’t have the high- and low-back modes in the booster configuration. It only has the high back mode, and that’s it.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Jam-packed with features
  • Easy to install
  • Excellent value for money

Cons

  • A bit too heavy and bulky
  • Limited settings in some configurations

How to Install

Safety 1st Grow and Go EX Air 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Arctic Dream

The installation process is fairly easy once you get the seat inside the car, as it’s quite heavy and bulky. The folks at Safety 1st are kind enough to feature a couple of Safety 1st Grow & Go EX Air 3-in-1 convertible car seat installation video tutorials and by doing so, they’ve made it so much easier to explain.

As you might recall, if your child measures between 19 and 49 inches in height and weighs between 5 and 50 pounds, you will want to install the seat in a rear-facing configuration.

In order to do so, you can install it with the latch or with the vehicle’s seat belt. Just keep in mind that when using the latch for installation, the lower anchor can only take up to 40 pounds of weight.

That’s why we suggest installing the seat with the seat belt right away, because that way you won’t to have to do it again, once your child outgrows the lower anchor weight limitation. If safety is your concern, rest assured that seat belts are equally safe as the latch.

To watch the installation process with latch, check this video:

If you want to install the seat in a rear-facing configuration by utilizing your seatbelt, make sure you watch this video first:

When your toddler grows up to a height of between 29 and 49 inches, and weighs between 22 and 65 pounds, you can switch the seat from rear to front facing. Once again, you can install the seat by using the latch or the vehicle’s own seatbelt.

Now it makes even more sense to perform the installation by using the belt, but if you still prefer the latch, here’s a video that describes the whole process:

For a forward-facing installation with a seatbelt, watch this video:

Finally, here’s a Safety 1st Grow & Go EX Air 3-in-1 convertible car seat video that will show you how to convert the seat to a belt-positioning booster mode:

The Safety 1st Guide 65 is a convertible that is rated for extended rear-facing, and front-facing up to 65 pounds or 52 inches in height. And yet it is remarkably lightweight and compact, small enough to install 3-across in most vehicles. That makes the Safety 1st Guide 65 a great choice for growing families  who need to use multiple car seats at once, or for parents with a small car that need a car seat that doesn't take up too much space.

It doesn't have a lot of the convenient features you will find in more expensive car seats. It doesn't have a non-rethreadable harness. It isn't very easy to install, and doesn't recline. However, it's a functional, compact, affordable car seat that is small enough to fit three across, light enough to easily carry in an airport or on a plane, or affordable enough to give to a family member or care giver as an occasional use car seat. When space or cost are an issue, the Safety 1st Guide 65 is a great choice.

Pros and Cons of Safety 1st Guide 65

Pros

  • Narrow enough to fit 3 across in many vehicles
  • Side impact protection
  • Up-front harness adjustment for fast accurate fit
  • Adjustable head rest
  • FAA approved

Cons

  • Can be difficult to install

Safety 1st Guide 65 vs. Safety 1st Guide 65 Sport

Safety 1st Guide 65

VS

Safety 1st Guide 65 Sport

At first glance, the Safety 1st Guide 65 and the Safety 1st Guide 65 Sport are extremely similar car seats. They are both 2-in-1 convertibles, with many of the same features. Both car seats have:

  • Rear-facing weight limits: 4 – 40 pounds
  • Forward-facing weight limits: 22-65 pounds
  • Five point harness with up front adjustment
  • Side impact protection
  • Adjustable head rest
  • Removable cup holder
  • Machine washable seat pad
  • Slim, compact design

In fact, there are just very slight differences between these two models. The Safety 1st Guide 65 Sport:

  • Has a lower front-facing height limit, at 34 – 42 inches, vs the 29 – 49 inches of the base model
  • Is the same width but lighter in weight, at 14 pounds vs 15 pounds
  • Does not come with the infant pillows
  • Is slightly less expensive

If you are considering the Safety 1st Guide 65 particularly because it's an incredibly compact, light weight, convertible car seat, ideal for 3-across installations or for frequent travel, then the Safety 1st Guide 65 Sport may be an even better alternative. It's even lighter, and is more affordable, and has the same narrow width and convertible convenience.

If you have an infant, then the Safety 1st Guide 65 base model is the better choice, because the newborn support pillows are usually necessary to help the harness fit correctly in infants. It's also never recommended to use infant support pillows that are not specifically designed for that make and model of car seat, since harness fit is so crucial for safety, so it isn't a good idea to pick up different infant pillows from a different manufacturer.

As the name implies, the Safety 1st Guide 65 Sport is a smaller, lighter, less expensive, sportier version of the popular Guide 65 car seat, and is a great option for portability and travel. For daily use, the Guide 65 base model might be a better choice.

Marcus Thackeray's Safety 1st Guide 65 Car Seat Review

Conclusion

Part of the Safety 1st brand is to offer child restraint seats at a price that parents can afford. The Guide 65 is an overall good choice if you are looking for a convertible car seat to keep your precious cargo safe and comfortable.

Safety is the most significant concern for parents. The Guide 65 has side impact protection and an anti-rebound bar that adds an extra layer of security. You will need to roll a towel to position your little one in the safest recline. The Guide 65 has a no-rethread harness that makes adjustments so much easier.

Safety 1st Guide 65 Convertible Car Seat, Chambers

Safety 1st Guide 65 (click image for more info)

The Guide 65 lacks ease of installation, especially in rear-facing mode. If you choose to use your vehicle belt system, the fit is not quite right while in rear-facing mode. A belt locking clip is a requirement for securing rear-facing installation in most positions. In the forward-facing position, the installation is more comfortable, but the LATCH system can be stubborn.

The Safety 1st Guide 65 works best for carpoolers and busy parents. It is lightweight, narrow, and affordable. However, in rear-facing mode, it does become difficult to install.

For most parents looking for an all-in-one, they want a balance of convenience and value without sacrificing safety.

But of course, no parent ever wants to sacrifice safety, so it's important to spend every dollar where it matters most.

That’s where the Safety 1st Multifit EX Air comes in!

Who is the Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air Most Suitable For?

Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air 4-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Amaro

The Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air is a fantastic car seat for parents who want an all-in-one convertible car seat with extended rear-facing.

Rear-facing is the position that is safest for children, and experts recommend that children ride for rear-facing for as long as possible; two or more years, or until they outgrow their car seat. With the Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air, children can ride rear-facing up to a long 50 pounds or 49 inches tall, which is very impressive for an all-in-one.

After children outgrow rear-facing, the car seat converts front-facing, and then into a seat belt positioning booster that keeps kids safe up to 100 pounds or 52 inches tall. In that respect, it's comparable to other all-in-ones, but at a more affordable price.

For parents who want the security of extended rear-facing in an affordable all-in-one, the Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air is tough to beat.

Pros and Cons of Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air

Pros

  • Air Protect side impact protection system around the head
  • Harness holders hold the harness out of the way, making it simpler to get children into the carseat
  • Body insert pillows provide custom comfort for small children and infants
  • QuickFit Harness adjusts harness and headrest in one fast step without rethreading
  • Three position recline for better fit and comfort
  • Takes up less space in the rear seat of a car, for improved front passenger leg room
  • Machine washable seat pad is easy to remove and replace
  • FAA approved when used in harness mode

Cons

  • Installation is difficult
  • According to Fakespot, high percentage of fake reviews  make it difficult to find reliable user feedback

Both car seats are extremely similar in size, and have a narrow shape and recline angle that preserves front passenger leg room, as well as space in the back seat. Both car seats suffer from similar drawbacks, in that many people find them difficult to install securely.

However, for younger children, the Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air may be a slightly safer car seat, because it has the advanced Air Protect side impact protection system for more protection around the head, and because it supports rear-facing children for longer, up to 50 pounds and 49 inches. Experts recommend that children remain rear-facing for as long as possible, and with the Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air, they can remain rear-facing for 9 more inches in height, or 10 more pounds in weight.

However, once the seats are forward-facing, there are very few distinctions between them, so for parents of bigger or older children, it makes sense to choose the more affordable Safety 1st Grow and Go. For infants and newborns, the Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air is probably a better choice.

Vivian Risby Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air Review

Conclusion

The Safety 1st MultiFit EX Air has the extended rear facing that safety-minded parents are looking for, along with the convenience of an all-in-one that converts to a belt-positioning booster and protects children up to 100 pounds.

It's compact, lightweight, and affordable as well, making this all-in-one a great choice for parents who want the most value and safety for their money.

Safety 1st Grow and Go Review

Please click image for more info

Many parents want the convenience of a single car seat that will last their child for years to come, instead of getting a new car seat at every stage of growth. The problem is that those car seats tend to be big, heavy, and take up a lot of room in a car, even when a child is small enough that they don't need such a large car seat.

The Safety 1st Grow and Go is an all-in-one convertible car seat that is designed to save space and weight, with the convenience of a single car seat that can protect a child up to 100 pounds or 52 inches. Even better, it's offered at an unbeatable price. Let's take a closer look at this popular car seat.

Who is the Safety 1st Grow and Go Most Suitable For?

Safety 1st Grow and Go 3-in-1 Car Seat, Blue Coral

Many all-in-one convertible car seats are big and heavy, because they need to be large enough to support and protect children at the upper limits of the car seat's range, even if the child will be smaller than that for most of the years they use the car seat. This can be a big drawback in an all-in-one; if a parent wanted to buy a new carseat every couple of years, they could probably have a series of car seats that are more perfectly sized to their child and to their vehicle.

Unlike many all-in-ones that are extremely large and heavy, the Safety 1st Grow and Go is compact and light weight for a car seat in this class. In fact, it's designed to save front passengers up to 7 inches of leg room when installed rear-facing, making it a more friendly design for smaller cars.

Pros and Cons of Safety 1st Grow and Go

Pros

  • Harness holders keep the harness out of the way while you place the child in the car seat
  • QuickFit harness adjusts the harness and headrest in one quick step
  • Machine washable and dryer-safe seat pad is easy to remove and replace
  • Configured to install rear-facing without taking up leg room for the front passengers
  • FAA approved in harness modes (but not booster)

Cons

  • Harness requires rethreading in the smallest/newborn positions
  • Can be difficult to tighten the harness
  • Can be difficult to tighten LATCH straps and secure the car seat
  • Large percentage of fake reviews according to Fakespot give an artificially high product rating

Overview of Safety 1st Grow and Go

Safety 1st Grow and Go 3-in-1 Car Seat, Blue Coral

The Safety 1st Grow and Go is an all-in-one convertible car seat that transitions from rear-facing, to forward-facing, to a belt positioning booster.

So, it can fit children from 5 – 100 pounds, and fro m19 – 52 inches in height. But it is less than 19 pounds in weight, and just over 19 inches wide, so it saves space and is easier to handle.

The clever design of the Grow and Go also preserves space in the front seat, so that in a rear-facing installation, front passengers can get up to 7 inches more leg room. It's a car seat with everything a growing child needs, and all the convenience that parents need too.

Safety

What are this model’s NHTSA ratings? All car seats sold in the USA must meet or exceed strict federal safety and crash test standards, so the NHTSA does not rate car seats for safety. Instead, they offer ratings and evaluations for ease of use.

According to the NHTSA, the Safety 1st Grow and Go has earned (for the forward-facing installation):

  • Labels: 3/5 stars because the labels lack supplemental sizing information, do not give indication of the correct harness height relative to the child's body, and do not explain how to use LATCH.
  • Instructions: 5/5 stars
  • Securing the child: 4/5 stars because the harness slots are small or misaligned, the harness needs to be rethreaded to adjust and correctly fit the child, the LATCH belt needs to be re-routed when converting between seating modes, and replacing the harness after using the seat in booster seat mode requires referring to the instructions in the owner's manual.
  • Installation features: 3/5 stars because it may be uncomfortable for people with large hands to route a seat belt or LATCH belt through the belt path, the storage location for LATCH belt and/or tether strap is not obvious, and the hook-style LATCH attachments may require twisting to detach from lower anchors.
  • Overall ease of use: 4/5 stars

The Safety 1st Grow and Go has earned an overall 2/5 star NHTSA ease of use rating for the rear-facing installation, and 3/5 stars for booster seat installation, for different reasons than those given above.

As you can see, the Graco 4 Ever, with its metal frame, additional booster mode, and higher weight and height limits, is meant to be a more durable, robust, long-lasting convertible. It has a simple installation system, more recline angles, and more harness and headrest positions to ensure an accurate fit over time. For a convertible car seat with that kind of longevity, reliability, and safety, many people think the Graco 4Ever is worth the money.

However, the Safety 1st Grow and Go is smaller, lighter, and much more affordable. For a car seat with up to 10 years of usability at that price, many parents simply can't pass it up. It's a great option as a backup car seat, or for occasional care givers and family members who don't drive a child every day, and don't want a new car seat every time they grow a few inches.

With its more compact size, and a design that saves front passengers up to 7 inches of leg room, the Safety 1st Grow and Go is also a better choice for smaller cars or multiple car seat installations in the same vehicle.

Little messes are bound to happen. The Grow and Go convertible car seat has an easily removable cover that you can machine wash. You will likely need to roll a towel to position your little one in the safest and most comfortable recline position.

Families on a budget benefit the most from the Safety 1st Grow and Go 3-in-1 Convertible car seat. It is a rear-facing to forward-facing child restraint that then transitions into a highback booster seat. It will last awhile, but it does have a low weight and height limit.
